Position Purpose
The incumbent provides strategic leadership in the design, implementation, and governance of secure, business-driven IT solutions across the University. Reporting to the Chief Information Security Officer with a dotted line to the Enterprise Architect, this role translates complex business requirements into robust security architectures, ensuring alignment with University policies, Canadian regulatory standards, and industry best practices. The incumbent is responsible for safeguarding the confidentiality, integrity, and availability of all University IT assets and data, influencing security practices across faculties, services, vendors, and other stakeholders. By driving the development and continuous improvement of security frameworks and reference architectures, the role proactively addresses emerging threats and technological advancements. The incumbent works collaboratively with cross-functional teams to embed security principles in all IT projects, enabling the University's academic, research, and operational objectives while maintaining a strong security posture.
In this role, your responsibilities will include:
Enterprise Security Assessment: Lead comprehensive, University-wide assessments of enterprise risks, threats, vulnerabilities, and anomalous activities to inform security planning and roadmaps aligned with business strategies and objectives.
Security Architecture Development: Define, document, and maintain current and target-state security architectures; identify gaps, conduct trend analyses, and recommend best practices for future-state design.
Principles and Standards: Establish and communicate institutional security architecture principles, standards, and reference models to guide the integration of security requirements into solutions across networks, infrastructure, applications, and services.
Architectural Design Leadership: Lead the architectural design, development, and deployment of secure, high-quality IT infrastructure solutions, ensuring alignment with strategic business needs, financial constraints, and technical requirements such as high availability and disaster recovery.
Planning and Security Roadmap: Develop and maintain security roadmaps, including oversight and regular assessment of disaster recovery and security procedures to ensure institutional information integrity.
What you will bring:
A University degree in Computer Science or Information Technology or a related field or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
Certification in information security is required, such as Certified Information Systems Security Professional (CISSP), Certified Information Security Manager (CISM), Certified Information Systems Auditor (CISA), or other equivalent credentials.
Minimum ten years of progressive experience in IT security, with demonstrated expertise in IT security domains.
Strong understanding of risk-based approaches, as well as regulatory and compliance issues relevant to IT security.
Expert knowledge of network infrastructures (LAN, MAN, WAN), network security architecture, storage area networks, and server infrastructure in multi-technology environments.
Excellent business and technological acumen, leadership style, and organizational skills suited to managing multiple concurrent projects.
Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to convey technical concepts to non-technical audiences.
Bilingualism (French and English, oral and written).
Proven experience in systems integration, and in the planning and implementation of network security devices.
Demonstrated ability to estimate the financial impact of security architecture alternatives.
Knowledge of concepts, philosophies, and tools behind application, information, and IT architecture design.
Experience in building and maintaining effective working relationships with vendors and external partners.
Ability to apply project management methodologies to define, plan, cost, resource, track, and deliver targeted goals.
Experience in designing for accessibility, scalability, and availability.
Ability to proactively stay current with new and emerging technologies, industry trends, and best practices.
