Reporting Relationship





The Assistant Supervisor reports directly to the Supervisor of Binoojiinh Gamgoonhs Childcare Centre.




Position Summary





The Assistant Supervisor will ensure that children at the centre are receiving high-quality programming in a caring, inviting and safe classroom environment which promotes each child's Anishinaabek identity, self-confidence, well-being and achievement. The Assistant Supervisor will also support the Supervisor with other duties as assigned.




Essential Functions





High Quality Programs and Learning Environment:


Ensure the learning environment offers early learners a sense of welcome and belonging, where they can make decisions and develop socially and emotionally. Coach, model and provide training related to early literacy and numeracy skills, including phonological awareness and concepts of number and print. Provide educators with clear expectations, including the implementation of "How Does Learning Happen? Ontario's Pedagogy for the Early Years"; "HighScope Curriculum"; and the Quality Improvement Project and "Oversee resource-supports provided for students with special needs. Support the integration of Anishinaabek culture and language throughout the program, to build children's sense of identity and pride in their ancestry. Ensure that educators use strategies which promote a calm, welcoming, engaging and respectful classroom environment. Address educator conflicts in an immediate, supportive and proactive manner. Collaborate with educators to provide input to quarterly and annual reports (i.e., activities related to cultural learning and early literacy/numeracy skill development.)



Staff Recruitment, Training and Supervision





Collaborate with the Supervisor and HR manager for the recruitment and hiring of educator-staff (e.g., input to job postings, job descriptions, interview questions). Conduct performance appraisals for classroom educators, educator assistants and resource educators. Share observations, constructive feedback and positive reinforcement to staff regarding program implementation and the classroom environment. Coordinate staff learning related to program and learning the environment. Inform staff of conferences and learning opportunities related to their work. Ensure that classroom educators (ECEs) and support staff (EA's) follow childcare and MFN policies/procedures and adhere to the College of ECEs Code of Ethics and Standards of Practice.



Administrative Duties

:





Collaborate with and work under the direction of the Childcare Supervisor to: Ensure that the centre is managed in an effective and positive manner. Review, develop and implement childcare policies and parent/staff handbooks. Ensure ministry licensing requirements are understood and followed. Schedule staff meetings, prepare agendas and schedule PD sessions. Contribute information required for reporting to the Ministry or Chief and Council. Prepare the annual calendar for approval by Chief and Council. Welcome and introduce ECE students at centre for field placements. Order learning materials and resources. Attend Chief and Council meetings and Education Dept. meetings as needed Attend training and workshops related to high quality childcare programming. Support the Supervisor to prepare Serious Incident Reports and follow-up reports (e.g., to Kina Gbezhgomi Child & Family Services, the Ministry of Education and College of Early Childhood Educators) as well as briefing notes regarding the incident.



Health and Safety





Collaborate with and work under the direction of the Childcare Supervisor to: Ensure that all staff understand their duty to report child abuse to proper authorities. Respond to serious accidents or illnesses, obtaining medical assistance, notifying the parent/guardian of the child, and transporting to the hospital if warranted. Meet health & medical supervision requirements and administer First Aid as needed. Have an up-to-date list of addresses and telephone numbers of staff members, substitute staff, medical officer of health, a physician, ambulance, hospital, fire department, police department and other emergency information. Support the administration of medications as needed.



Communication with Parents/Guardians and Community Members





Support education staff in the appropriate use of written, verbal and digital communication with parents and monitor communication on a regular basis to ensure consistency of use. Address within 24 hours, parent/staff concerns related to education staff, program and/or learning environment. Meet with parents/guardians as needed, to discuss their child's learning needs. Ensure parent messages concerning their child are provided to the child's educator(s) and posted on message board. Facilitate the submission of articles for the M'Chigeeng newsletter to promote the childcare centre and provide information to parents/guardians/community.



Qualifications and Requirements




Early Childhood Education Diploma or qualifications and work experience in a related field An understanding of Ministry of Education licensing requirements for childcare centres Experience working in a Childcare setting Valid First Aid and CPR or willingness to obtain. A caring and compassionate approach with children, staff, parents and caregivers Excellent interpersonal and collaboration skills and the ability to work effectively individually and within a team environment. Clear Vulnerable Sector Check upon successful selection for the position Proof of up-to-date Immunizations, and completion of a health assessment.

CRC/VSS Rationale



CRC must be thirty (30) days current and be an original or certified copy. All individuals applying for employment with MFN Education programs are required to submit a Vulnerable Sector Screen and Criminal Record Check as these individuals will be working directly/indirectly with students. All individuals employed under the education program must have a record clear of charges and convictions relating to child sexual harassment or abuse of any kind.
