Position Description

The (Earth@UCalgary) in the Faculty of Science in partnership with the School of Public Policy (SPP) at the University of Calgary invites applications for a full-time Assistant Professor (tenure track) with a specialization in geosystems modeling for clean energy pathways intersecting with policy research. This position is a key piece of a larger Resource and Policy Nexus cluster hiring initiative, with three new positions creating unprecedented opportunities for transdisciplinary collaborations between science and policy. The anticipated start date is July 1, 2024.

We seek a candidate with a research program that can transform global energy systems toward a low-carbon future by leveraging geological clean energy pathways, such as geothermal energy, hydrogen storage and production, critical mineral production, geological carbon sequestration, or other subsurface pathways. The successful candidate will apply innovative geosystems modeling and data analysis approaches to evaluate clean energy pathway development and mitigate interference of competing pathways. In particular, we are looking for a candidate who creates impact by advancing geoscientific understanding of multiple pathway development, while simultaneously seeking to address policy considerations for effectively managing resources in geological systems. Applicants must hold a PhD in earth science, geology, geophysics, energy science, or a closely related discipline and have a strong record of impactful research related to geosystems modeling. \'Impact\' here is anticipated to be primarily in the scholarly context, but our preference is for candidates who understand and may have experienced success in achieving policy impacts as well. The successful candidate will be expected to establish an active, high-quality research program, as evidenced by: securing external research funding from a variety of sources; publication in scholarly and/or policy-relevant forums; dissemination of innovative scholarly work and applied policy options; and fostering relations with relevant partners (e.g., government, Indigenous groups, industry, academic) in the field.

The candidate will play an important role in teaching and research supervision of students at the undergraduate and graduate level. The successful applicant will be prepared to teach undergraduate and graduate courses in Earth@UCalgary and at the SPP, providing evidence of teaching excellence and the desire to pursue pedagogical and curricular development in an academic setting. Evidence of effective graduate and undergraduate student supervision as well as experience in policy analysis and policy knowledge mobilization is an asset. Additionally, the candidate should provide evidence of collegial contributions within their organization and their commitment to equity, diversity, and inclusion (EDI), since they will be expected to fully engage in departmental and university service at the University of Calgary and work effectively with people from diverse communities and cultures.

The Department of Earth, Energy, and Environment is a newly formed department at the University of Calgary, whose genesis was driven by the need to tackle significant Earth challenges that are emerging today. We are building a community of change-makers: a group of people who will leverage existing expertise and approach problems from every angle to find creative solutions. We have an audacious growth plan that will see us expand in the next 5 years into new areas of research and teaching, with a focus on mobilizing science and creating positive impact. School of Public Policy is Canada\'s leading policy school with a faculty complement seconded from economics, science, social science, medicine, kinesiology, and legal backgrounds who advance practical and data-driven policy research. Alongside its Masters in Public Policy, the SPP is also home to the graduate level Sustainable Energy Development Masters, on which we collaborate closely with Earth@UCalgary. The School also provides executive training certificates through its Extractive Resources Governance Program.

The candidate will help launch the new department in bold directions through collaborations with SPP. Together, the stimulating and intellectually expansive setting will enable the candidate to explore transdisciplinary research that transforms science into action, informing equitable and sustainable development of natural resources for a clean energy future. This is not a role that will live in isolation; quite the opposite. It is one of three transdisciplinary Research and Policy Nexus positions that will form a nucleus of researchers tackling natural resource challenges that crosscut science and policy. As such, the candidate will benefit from a transdisciplinary team focused on science-policy intersections, supported by a purpose-built mentorship program designed to elevate all candidates and ensure they succeed. The successful candidate will split their time between the main campus (Earth@UCalgary) and downtown campus (SPP).
