Position Description

The Department of Electrical and Software Engineering at the University of Calgary is pleased to invite applications for a tenure-track Assistant Professor position in Embedded Systems for Smart Agriculture with an anticipated start date of September 1, 2023.

Candidates with an earned doctoral degree (or equivalent) in Electrical Engineering or a closely related discipline and demonstrated excellence in research and teaching are invited to apply.

At the University of Calgary, smart agriculture is aligned with the University\'s One Health research theme and supported by growing partnerships between researchers in the Schulich School of Engineering and the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine.

The University of Calgary is also home to a unique facility to support smart agriculture: W.A. Ranches is working cow-calf ranch with a land base of 19,000 acres for cattle, farmland for feed production, and wildlife habitat. This unique facility enables us to conduct cutting-edge research on a bona fide working ranch and provides endless teaching opportunities.

The successful candidate should be familiar with current challenges for the agricultural industry across the supply chain and opportunities for technologies. The development and/or application of smart technologies along the agri-food value chain includes technologies for automated operations, tools for monitoring or analysis aimed at optimizing production, and traceability technologies for supply chains.

Within the broad topic of Embedded Systems for Smart Agriculture, experience in one or more of the following areas is required:

design and integration of embedded systems for smart agriculture applications

applications of artificial intelligence and machine learning for smart agriculture

development of novel sensing and mapping strategies for smart agriculture

design of durable, energy-efficient, secure and reliable embedded systems

design of sensing hardware and hardware implementation

optimization and development of embedded systems technologies such as system on chip (SOC), FPGA, and RISC-V

scalable algorithm and embedded software development using real-time operating systems and machine level firmware

Experimental experience implementing embedded systems is required.

Position Requirements

The successful candidate will demonstrate:

a record of high-quality research and publications

the potential to establish an externally funded research program, and to achieve international recognition within five years

the alignment between their research interests and the research priorities of the Schulich School of Engineering and the University of Calgary

the ability to attract and develop excellent trainees, students, and future researchers

ability to teach a range of undergraduate and graduate courses related to the topics in the position description above

excellent written and oral communication skills

a commitment to Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion in Engineering

Candidates should be eligible for registration as a Professional Engineer with the Association of Professional Engineers and Geoscientists of Alberta (APEGA).

Experience working in industry or on industrial projects is considered an asset.
