The Department of English and Film Studies (EFS) in the Faculty of Arts at the University of Alberta invites applications for a tenure-track position in Creative Writing - Fiction. Applicants with interests in literary fiction, short fiction, science fiction, Indigenous or Afro-Indigenous futurism, fantasy, and/or children's/young adult fiction are particularly welcome.

Position

• Responsibilities will include undergraduate teaching and graduate teaching, graduate mentorship and supervision, and university service.

• The teaching load in EFS is four one-term courses per year (2u)

Candidates must hold or be close to completing a PhD or MFA in Creative Writing or a related field. The degree must be completed within one year of the starting date of the appointment. Although all qualified applications will be considered, this position prioritizes Indigenous writers, Black writers, and writers of colour. A record of public engagement and experience in the fields of publishing/editing will be considered assets, as will an interest in Indigenous- and/or community-centred pedagogy.

The Creative Writing (WRITE) program at the University of Alberta, one of Canada's top five research universities, is one of the oldest and most illustrious in Canada. We offer an exciting and diverse range of courses, including fiction, non-fiction and poetry, along with creative research and experimental forms of writing. Our program has our students working closely with active and talented writers. We also have community-focused courses in which students engage in collective and grassroots creative writing and research projects, expanding thought, asking questions and attending to the voices of others. Creative coursework can be combined with community outreach and interaction in order to earn a Community Service-Learning Certificate, benefitting both our students and our community. The Writer-in-Residence program in EFS has flourished for more than 40 years, bringing acclaimed writers to Edmonton from September 1st to May 31st each year. The City of Edmonton plays host to many literary events, including and the .

The Department of English and Film Studies is home to thriving undergraduate programs in English, Film Studies and Creative Writing and to a suite of high-demand courses in Writing Studies. Students may complete an Honours or Major degree in English or Film Studies, and a Minor in these two areas or in Creative Writing. Graduate students have the opportunity to complete the MA and PhD in English as well as creative MA by thesis or course. One of the largest departments in the Faculty of Arts, English and Film Studies serves students across the University at the first-year level and through our programs' senior and graduate curricula. Writers teaching in the WRITE program may be interested in teaching critical/historical courses in fiction in the English curriculum.

EFS has strong connections to research projects and signature areas across the University, including and ), and in the Faculty of Arts, including , , , , the (CWRC), and the (CLC).
