The Assistant Paper Machine Superintendent position reports to the Paper Mill Manager. The position supports the Operations, Maintenance and Technical teams in optimizing the safe and efficient operation of the paper machine. Recommending process changes, capital improvement projects to enhance machine performance, and participating in new paper grade developments are important aspects of this role.

Responsibilities & Duties

  • Effective self-motivated leader capable of empowering, prioritizing, and directing team towards common vision and achievement of mill goals.
  • Healthy curiosity and involvement in mill operations. Frequently on production floor not in the office.
  • Ensure department performance meets expectations outlined in the production plan.
  • Participate in development and implementation of efficiency and improvement projects.
  • Identify and support energy reduction projects.
  • Establish forward-thinking concepts to reduce sewer losses and improve water management efficiencies.
  • Key stakeholder in maintenance workflow and shutdown planning and execution.
  • Ability to interact with and influence individuals at all levels of the organization.
  • Utilize mechanical aptitude in troubleshooting and optimizing paper machine operations.
  • Understand need to support and lead a 24/7 operation: reside within 75km of the ANC mill site, be easy to contact/responsive, come in early/stay late as needed, etc.

What you will bring to the role:
  • Mechanical Engineering degree or Engineering Technologist diploma is required. Other engineering disciplines may be considered.
  • 5-8+ years of proven production leadership experience, ideally in an industrial manufacturing environment.
  • Papermaking experience displaying a strong passion and understanding of machine operations is preferred.
  • Strong safety mindset with ability to innovate solutions to safety challenges.
  • Knowledge of and experience supporting Management of Change (MOC) initiatives.
  • Be an adept user of Microsoft Office products (Word, Excel, Project, Outlook).
  • Positive attitude, especially in face of challenges.
  • Enjoy troubleshooting, clearing roadblocks and adapting to change quickly.
  • Excellent communication skills (written and verbal).
  • Collaborative team player with the ability to work in a fast-paced environment.
  • Ability to maintain performance when faced with tight deadlines and frequent changes.
