The City of Port Moody has an exciting new opportunity for a regular, full-time Assistant Manager of Communications & Engagement to join our team!


The Assistant Manager of Communications and Engagement supports a team of dedicated professionals within the City's Communications and Engagement Division. As part of the Corporate Services Department, the Division is responsible for guiding the City's public engagement framework and delivering all corporate communication functions. The Assistant Manager of Communications and Engagement provides leadership and guidance in the development and execution of strategic communications and engagement initiatives. Through collaboration with colleagues across the organization, this role ensures that communications are transparent, timely, factual, relevant, and clear, and that public engagement is conducted in an authentic, inclusive, and meaningful manner.


Responsibilities:


Support the Manager of Communications and Engagement in delivering a continuous and consistent professional level of service across the organization Develop well-considered proactive communications plans Guide timely reactive communications response to emergent issues Provide strategic guidance, manage project workflows, and coordinate team deliverables for public engagement initiatives Participate in the long-range planning, development, and implementation of new communications and engagement strategies, tools, or processes Exercise sound independent decision-making and approval on various staff and consultant work, including direct oversight of one staff position Assist in preparing and monitoring capital and operating budgets Draft or provide input into Council and Committee reports, presentations, and other correspondence for manager review Act for the Manager of Communications and Engagement, when required, and may act as Information Officer during Emergency Operations Center activations Provide communications leadership outside of regular business hours as required (i.e.: for City events, Council/Committee meetings, or statutory holidays) May participate on Council Advisory Bodies or staff committees




Basic Qualifications:


Bachelor's degree in Communications, Journalism, Public Relations, or a related field with 3-5 years of relevant experience in communications and engagement Knowledge of local government, and priorities and opportunities specific to Port Moody Awareness of community sentiment on local issues, and ability to provide advice in a complex political environment Knowledge of IAP2 best practices in public engagement Highly proficient in understanding complex information and distilling key points into plain language, public communications Excellent oral and written communications skills Analytical thinker and creative problem-solver Adept at anticipating communication needs and at identifying potential emergent issues requiring timely communication response Ability to respectfully handle confidential information and sensitive issues with tact, skill, and diplomacy. Demonstrated ability to manage multiple projects under tight deadlines and work well under pressure Strong interpersonal skills with ability to build and maintain positive relationships with staff teams, Mayor and Council, the public, media, and other external interest holders Flexibility to work outside of regular business hours as operationally required Considerable knowledge of typical communications processes and tactics such as writing for different audiences and delivery methods, graphic design, web development, intranet, social media, advertising, media relations, and signage.
