Description: The Assistant Head Nurse (AHN) provides effective clinical leadership, functional supervision and, as needed, performs front line Registered Nursing duties. The AHN promotes and models leadership competencies by demonstrating good judgement and critical thinking skills, and developing and maintaining strong nursing practice in the designated scope of practice. The AHN fosters team effectiveness, demonstrating excellent interpersonal and leadership skills, communicating effectively and seeking to resolve staff issues. The AHN develops a supportive environment for multidisciplinary learning. This position is covered by the terms and conditions of the UNA Collective Agreement.

Required Qualifications:

Required Qualifications: Graduate of a Registered Nurse program or recognized equivalent required. Active registration with the College of Registered Nurses of Alberta (CRNA) or College of Registered Psychiatric Nurse of Alberta (CRPNA) is required. Basic Life Support Healthcare Provider (Level C) required.

Additional Required Qualifications:

3 years of recent (within the last two years) and related inpatient surgical nursing experience. 1 years of recent (within last two years) and related inpatient surgical charge nurse experience. Ability to independently take a patient assignment as required o Ability to respond to a code blue or rapid response. Excellent written and verbal communication. Ability to stand and walk for extended periods of time (up to 5 hours per 8 hour shift). Ability to lift/transfer up to 30 kg (66 pounds) multiple times per shift, ability to lift 5 kg (8-11 pounds) above shoulder. Ability to work various shifts including days, evenings, nights and weekends and statutory holidays Demonstrated excellent organizational, interpersonal, communication and priority setting skills. Demonstrated reliability. Able to work collaboratively in a multidisciplinary team environment. Proficient in working within a computerized environment including Microsoft Office and Outlook. Ability to work in a high paced, highly stressful environment and able to deescalate tense situations through strong conflict resolution skills.

Preferred Qualifications:

Recent surgery experience within the last 2 years.
