within the

Facilities Management

is currently seeking a Full-time Regular

Assistant Groundskeeper

(2 positions).


Operations and Maintenance (O&M), Grounds Department is responsible for the maintenance of the University's campuses' hard and soft landscapes. Work activities include maintenance of turf, planted areas, trees, shrubs, irrigation systems, solid waste, and recycling collection, as well as maintenance and cleaning of roads, sidewalks, and parking lots. This department is also responsible for snow and ice control on our campuses.


This position reports to the Supervisor and Lead Hands. Under direct supervision, performs routine unskilled and semi-skilled work relating to grounds, roads, parking lots, and pathway maintenance.


Hours of work are 37.5 hours per week, 5 days per week. Overtime is not normally required, however, in case of emergency or snow removal operations, it may be authorized by the supervisor or lead hand. Call-in would be made on an as needed basis.


This position requires work be carried out with the following conditions: lifts of heights up to 4 meters, heavy lifting, year-round indoor and outdoor responsibilities, controlled hazardous environments, inclement weather conditions. Associated duties of this position include operation of the following equipment: push mowers, weed eaters, hand tools, light trucks, and operation of other hand-controlled power equipment.

Summary of Key Responsibilities

(job functions include but are not limited to):

Operating equipment that requires minimal instruction to operate. This includes push lawn mowers, line trimmers, and other handheld mechanical equipment, light trucks, skid steers, ride-on single deck mowers, ride-on sidewalk sweepers, and RTVs. Picking up recycling and waste at various bin locations. Picking up paper and other rubbish on campus grounds, roads, pathways, and parking lots. General cleanupwork in parkinglots, parkades, and around buildingentrances using manual tools or powered and ride-on equipment. Mowing/ trimming of grass using push mowers and line trimmers. Mowing of large lawn areas using the front-deck riding mower and performing cleaning and lubrication on assigned mowers as instructed. Assisting Groundskeepers to maintain shrubs, trees, and flowers using hand-held manual or powered tools. Assisting Groundskeepers in maintenance and repairs of the irrigationsystem. Clearing snow from building entrances, steps, sidewalks, and patios using shovels, hand operated power equipment or RTVs or mowers equipped with brooms or blades. Spreading liquid deicers, sand or salt by hand or with RTVs. Assisting Groundskeepers with pothole patching on road surfaces. Assisting Groundskeepers with minor concrete or brick sidewalk/pathway repairs.

Qualifications / Requirements:



Completion of a minimum formal education equivalent to Grade 12. Experience in the following fields would be an asset: public works, landscape maintenance and/or construction. Experience with, or a willingness to learn and an aptitude for operating smaller motorized equipment such as ride-on mowers, ride-on sweepers, and ATVs. Must be able to work with hand-held power tools and equipment. Must be safety conscious, operate equipment safely and wear required safety equipment when on the job. Must be able to take direction, possess good verbal skills, and be able to work alone or with others. Must enjoy working outdoors and be able to work in inclement weather conditions. Should enjoy working with tools and mechanical equipment, following established procedures, and taking responsibility for completing assigned tasks. Must have the strength and stamina to lift and carry heavy materials, and to perform repetitive tasks involving bending, stretching, walking and kneeling. A valid Class 5 drivers license (cannot be a graduated license) with proven good driving record (abstract required). This position would not be suitable for someone with plant, dust, or chemical allergies. A valid first-aid certificate would be an asset.
