General Accountability





This posting is for current and upcoming opportunities which may involve working various shifts/off days and various work reporting locations. For all positions, work reporting locations will vary as dictated by work assignments.


Provides supervisory assistance by monitoring and managing the work performed by employees in the section (e.g., involving the rehabilitation and/or maintenance of Subway track or tunnel-related work). May include supervising contracted workers as well. Assists in the co-ordination (e.g., planning work schedules, familiarizing employees with their work and safety procedures) of work in the section.

Key Job Functions




  • Completing daily job briefings and work plans, reviewing them in detail with hourly-rated employees to ensure all aspects and hazards associated with the work are fully understood
  • Assisting the Foreperson with administrative duties such as completion of the daily journal, timekeeping, record keeping, signing stock requisitions, purchase requisitions, vacation/bereavement requests, injury investigations, etc.
  • Ensuring that employees are familiar and comply with the policies and practices of the TTC with regard to rules, regulations and safe working practices and are properly trained in all aspects of the work and in the operation of any new/modified equipment
  • Investigating various injuries, accidents, incidents or other problems which may arise, and initiating corrective action or making recommendations
  • Assisting in the completion of employee performance appraisals (EPA) on an annual basis and counselling employees as required
  • Completing written reports, or reporting verbally concerning employees, activities, equipment, etc.
  • Recommending and implementing new improvements to equipment and/or methods of work
  • Ordering various materials, supplies and equipment and arranging for their distribution at various locations/work sites
  • Assisting the Foreperson with the monitoring and reporting of project status and advising of problems or delays
  • Assisting Forepersons with the assigning and scheduling of various pieces of equipment including locomotives, rail grinding cars, tamping cars, trucks, flat cars, cranes, front end loaders, and other specialized track maintenance equipment; ensuring that Commission vehicles are available for servicing
  • Conducting traction power cuts as required
  • Ensuring construction, maintenance and rehabilitation of the various TTC facilities meet established engineering, safety and cleanliness standards
  • Directing and providing on-the-job training to hourly-rated employees in the performance of track rehabilitation, maintenance and construction duties
  • Preparing and laying out special trackwork, including the drilling and cutting of various rail sections
  • Inspecting and maintaining track switches, lubricating of rails and switch cleaning
  • Maintaining signs, rail lubricators, rail joint slotting, etc.
  • Inspecting and repairing reaction rails and power rails
  • Bonding/welding of subway rail
  • Removing snow, salting and sanding at TTC properties
  • Placing rail and track accessories on site, and placing rails in position for welding
  • Participating in the TTC Customer Service Ambassador Program

Education and Experience




  • Completion of a post-secondary college diploma or university degree in a related discipline or a combination of education, training and experience deemed to be equivalent.
  • A Community College Diploma in the field of Civil/Structural Engineering would be an asset.


Additional Requirements




  • Requires knowledge of track and track inspection, construction, maintenance and repair standards, procedures and practices.
  • Must have or acquire working knowledge of relevant government legislation including the Occupational Health & Safety Act (Industrial and Construction) and other relevant regulations applicable to the work.
  • Must possess working knowledge of computers and relevant computerized applications such as word processing, database and scheduling software is a strong asset.
  • Must possess good mathematical, reading, writing and blueprint comprehension skills. In addition, must possess sound judgement, organizational, interpersonal, and communications skills.
  • Must possess a valid class \xe2\x80\x9cG\xe2\x80\x9d Province of Ontario Driver\xe2\x80\x99s Licence.
  • Supervisory experience in the transit/railroad area and/or related field would be an asset.
  • Will be required to attend and successfully complete various supervisory, safety and technical training programs related to the section and Track Maintenance (e.g. Track Maintenance Training Program, New Supervisors Program, WHMIS, Subway/SRT Rulebook, etc.).
  • Must have or quickly acquire a thorough knowledge of the Local 113 Collective Agreement, Seniority Regulations and Commission, Branch and Departmental policies, procedures and programs related to the work performed.
  • May be required to take the Operation Training Center\xe2\x80\x99s instruction to obtain a class DZ license and attain certification for the operation of various track maintenance equipment.
