Role Overview


The Sisters of Charity- Halifax is seeking a part-time Assistant Coordinator for their retirement centre in Halifax. The successful candidate will assist in caring for approximately 50 Sisters of Charity who reside in independent, assisted living and long term care at Caritas Residence, a facility owned and operated by Shannex. The Assistant Coordinator will report to the Coordinator of Care and work collaboratively with the Coordinator of Care's team, support staff, administrators of the facilities, health care and dietary staff to make Sisters feel at home.

Organizational Overview


As an international congregation of women religious since 1849 originating in Halifax, N.S., the mission of the Sisters of Charity Halifax is to give joyful witness to love: the love of God, of one another, and of all persons. Women of faith and a passion for serving those in need, the Sisters' ministries have focused on education, health care, and social service in Canada, USA, and Latin America. The priorities of the Sisters are to make God's love visible in all the places they minister by responding to the cries of the poor, addressing the climate crisis, and fostering racial justice.

Caritas Residence


Caritas Residence overlooks Halifax's Bedford Basin and offers a retirement community within a picturesque, park-like setting on the grounds adjacent to Mount Saint Vincent University and the former Sisters of Charity Motherhouse. Caritas Residence is managed by Shannex since opening in 2018, and originated as a retirement centre exclusively for the Sisters of Charity. Responding to the needs of the Sisters and the community, Caritas Residence has evolved as a mixed used retirement centre comprised of independent living, assisted living, and long term care for the Sisters of Charity members, lay men and women.

General



Assist the Coordinator of Care & her team in the development and delivery of programs and services. To be an advocate for the Sisters, and sensitive to their individual and community needs. To promote a holistic lifestyle, concern for the spiritual, physical, emotional, mental well-being. To provide services and programs that support and enhance their quality of life. To assist with the organization of funerals and ensure they are celebrated in ways that honour Sisters' lives. To assist in the organization of special feast days, jubilees, and in-house retreats. To ensure that required communication takes place with the Sisters' family. To be an active and supportive member of the care team. Part-time role of 20 hours per week.

Summary of Duties & Responsibilities



To be a good listener, compassionate, and understanding. To be mindful of each Sister's needs and provide support necessary for her to live a full life. To advocate on the Sister's behalf and accompany her to health and wellness appointments. To foster good communication and relationships with Sisters, staff, and all who share our home. To be accountable to the Sisters, Coordinator of Care, and Congregational Leadership Team. To share in the on-call responsibilities for emergencies.

Education/Experience



Bachelor's degree in a related field (i.e., healthcare, recreation, social sciences, gerontology, etc.) Five (5) years' experience in a related field. Valid NS driver's license. Experience, understanding, and promotion of religious life. Sensitivity to the mission and values of the Sisters of Charity - Halifax. Strong communication and interpersonal skills, critical thinker with excellent organizational skills. A passion for working with and caring for people. Flexible scheduling due to needs that may extend beyond traditional work hours.

Pay: $28,000.00-$31,000.00 per year
