At SMS Equipment, our Assistant Controller is responsible for the Company\xe2\x80\x99s general ledger and related accounting practices. The Assistant Controller will work with operations management to support the business in interpreting accounting results, monitoring activities, decision analysis and performance measurement. This position is in Acheson, AB.

This position offers a hybrid work arrangement and is temporary for a period of 18 months with a possibility of extension.

The salary range for this position is $95,000 - $110,000.

Responsibilities include but are not limited to:

  • Responsible for the timely, accurate and complete preparation of the Company\xe2\x80\x99s financial reporting on a standalone and consolidated basis.
  • Prepare and maintain accounting records in accordance with the Company\xe2\x80\x99s accounting policies.
  • Prepare accounting research of complex and non-complex issues as they arise.
  • Ensure the maintenance of the company\xe2\x80\x99s ERP as it relates to the financial information.
  • Accountable to ensure the ongoing development of the Companies internal controls system.
  • Analyze operational performance to plan and interprets major variances from budget.
  • Create ad-hoc reports and other tools for decision support, analyzing performance opportunities and trends. Recommend solutions and takes action to address issues found.
  • Support the taxation process from planning, installments, and preparation of the corporate tax returns.
  • Plan and execute the year end audit in a timely manner and be the main point of contact for auditors, ensuring a positive relationship.
  • Strive to continuously improve the efficiency of the yearly audit.
  • Provide day-to-day leadership including advice, guidance, and coordination to accounting staff.
  • Maintain a positive, respectful, and professional environment for all department members.
  • Establishes and implements department standards and policies including those for safety, health, and the environment.
  • Develops accounting processes to improve the accuracy, efficiency, and availability of information to stakeholders.
  • Strives to continuously improve the effectiveness and efficiency within the corporate accounting department.
Qualifications:

The successful candidate will possess an Undergraduate Business Degree with an Accounting Designation (CPA) paired with a minimum of 5 years experience in controllership and/or auditing. Additional requirements include:
  • Extensive knowledge in accounting principles and practices including International Financial Reporting Standards (IFRS) and/or Accounting Standards for Private Enterprise (ASPE)
  • Strong critical thinking skills with business and financial acumen, the ability to evaluate and assess value added business needs.
  • Previous management or supervisory experience with effective leadership skills to motivate, manage and develop staff.
  • Ability to drive forward continuous process improvements and challenge the status quo.
  • Collaborative team player who can cultivate strong relationships and influence others.
  • Strong computer skills with an advanced knowledge of Microsoft Excel and experience with ERP systems.
  • Demonstrated experience in preparing financial statements for management.
  • Experience in managing a financial audit.
  • Experience with an account reconciliation software would be considered an asset.
