Job Description


Purpose:
The Communications & Public Affairs Division (C&PA) is responsible for enhancing and protecting York University\'s culture, brand and reputation by increasing levels of positive awareness, understanding and engagement among its diverse audiences and constituents. The division provides: strategic advice and counsel to York U senior management, communication planning for institutional priorities, internal communications, producing and managing the two main institutional publications YFile and The York University Magazine, media and public relations, strategic brand marketing and institutional advertising and develops and maintains strong working relationships with key constituency groups. C&PA includes the following units: Business Intelligence & Planning, Media Relations & External Communications, Strategic & Internal Communications and University Brand & Marketing. Reporting to the Director, Strategic & Internal Communications, the Assistant Communications Coordinator (Deputy Editor of YFile) builds engagement and trust among faculty and staff by communicating institutional priorities and essential information, celebrating achievements of York University and reinforcing institutional culture (brand) among employees through YFile, the institution\'s primary internal communications vehicle. The Assistant Communications Coordinator/Deputy Editor of YFile provides professional, pro-active and reactive communications/editorial content planning and editorial oversight and serves as the primary contributing writer, and web and email production deputy editor. Additionally, serves as the primary back-up editor and production editor during peak times and when the Communications Coordinator/YFile Editor is absent. YFile is circulated to York faculty, staff, administration, board of governors, senate and students of York University and is available via e-mail subscription to external constituents and the public. YFile stories are also posted to the www/yorku.ca home page within the Featured Stories section.

Education:
University degree required, preferably in Journalism, Communications (Mass or Corporate), Marketing, English or an equivalent of 4 years recent experience (defined as within the last five years) working at York University and performing the same or similar tasks..

Experience:
5 - 7 years\' recent direct experience as a primary contributing writer or deputy editor of a daily web-based university publication or equivalent targeted to multiple internal (staff, faculty, students, administrators) and external audiences with at least two years\' experience at the editor level.

Skills:
Demonstrated skill/ability in the following areas: tact and diplomacy skills in addition to awareness and ability to work within a political environment. High degree of engaging professional writing - particularly news writing specifically for the Web. Advanced research, fact checking, communications planning and interviewing. Word-processing, Internet, Web authoring technology and/or desktop and Web publishing, including Wordpress. High degree of energy and excellent organizational skills. Ability to track and plan numerous communications initiatives and create communications products by sustaining in-depth questioning and interpretation of complex ideas. Ability to comprehend complex materials including research papers, policy papers, and technical reports, working effectively under pressure of high volume and meeting daily deadlines. Handling diverse public affairs assignments. Working independently and exercising good judgment. Editing news articles for publication, web posting and promotional material. Excellent oral and written communication skills. Strong internet search skills. Basic knowledge of HTML principles, photo manipulation software, Office 365 and Windows operating system.
