JOB DESCRIPTIONThe Corporation of the City of Orillia has an opening for the full-time position of Assistant City Solicitor in the Council Services Division of the Corporate Services Department.DUTIES

  • Assist the Director of Council Services to advise and represent the City on all legal matters, providing clear legal opinions and guidance to City Council and staff.
  • Provide competent and timely legal services as municipal legal counsel to the Corporation, along side the Director of Council Services.
  • Draft and review corporate, commercial, and general municipal contracts as required.
  • Manage and conduct research and analysis to calculate and develop valuations/appraisals (e.g., market, financial, feasibility analysis).
  • Provide forecasts and estimates for the Citys 10-Year Capital Program and other major corporate initiatives.
  • Meet with interested parties and legal representatives to provide information on project details and negotiate agreements, appraisal reviews, as well as witness statements.
  • Prepare and present reports for the Senior Leadership Team, City Council, and committees regarding legal matters.
QUALIFICATIONS
  • A bachelors degree and graduation from a recognized University and Law School.
  • Law Society of Ontario membership, in good standing.
  • Minimum of three years of progressive experience practicing law.
  • Litigation experience and/or knowledge and experience of municipal law would be an asset.
  • Excellent communication, research and report writing skills.
  • The ability to work in a team environment, liaison with key external stakeholders and individuals/departments at all levels of the organization, as well as function effectively with minimal supervision.
  • The ability to work under conditions of strict confidentiality is essential.
  • Excellent public relations skills with proven ability to build effective working relationships with all stakeholders, including business and government officials, community leaders, members of the public and staff.
  • Strong computer skills using MS Office applications, including Word, Excel, Access, PowerPoint, and Legal Research Data Bases.
  • Ability to read and interpret legal documents, plans, engineering drawings, technical reports, and real estate literature.
  • Must possess a valid class xe2x80x98G Ontarios drivers license with an acceptable drivers abstract and access to a reliable vehicle.
  • An acceptable Criminal Record Check is required for this position prior to the commencement date, at the incumbents expense.
Compensation for this position is $103,856 to $121,497 (2024 rates), based on a 35-hour work week, plus a comprehensive benefits package.
