Job Description

An asphalt lead hand is a construction worker with advanced experience in asphalt paving who leads a crew of labourers, ensuring efficient and safe completion of asphalt installation, repair, and maintenance projects, including tasks like directing crew members, quality control checks, equipment operation, and adherence to project specifications, all under the supervision of a paving foreman.

Key responsibilities of an asphalt lead hand:



Crew Supervision:



Assign tasks to crew members based on their skill level.

Monitor crew performance and productivity to meet project deadlines.

Provide on-the-job training to new crew members

Address any safety concerns and ensure compliance with safety regulations

Project Execution:



Read and interpret project plans and specifications to ensure work is completed according to requirements

Set grade stakes and establish project layout

Coordinate with equipment operators to ensure proper placement and compaction of asphalt

Perform quality control checks on asphalt density and surface finish

Equipment Management:



Operate and maintain paving equipment like rollers, pavers, and spreaders

Inspect equipment for proper functionality and report any issues

Ensure proper use and safety procedures are followed when operating equipment

Material Management:



Monitor asphalt material delivery and quality

Calculate material requirements for each project section

Ensure proper storage and handling of asphalt materials

Communication and Reporting:



Communicate effectively with the paving foreman regarding project progress, challenges, and necessary adjustments

Maintain daily work logs and record material usage

Report any safety concerns or incidents to the supervisor

Required skills and qualifications:

Extensive experience in asphalt paving operations, including knowledge of different asphalt types and application techniques

Strong leadership and supervisory skills to manage a crew effectively

Ability to read and interpret construction plans and blueprints

Understanding of safety regulations and procedures in the construction industry

Ability to operate heavy equipment like pavers, rollers, and loaders

Excellent communication skills to collaborate with crew members, foremen, and other project stakeholder

Job Types: Full-time, Permanent

Pay: $20.16-$24.00 per hour

Expected hours: 40 - 50 per week
