Job Description


Duties and Responsibilities:
Reporting to the Department Head, Research Support Services (RSS) and under the direction of the Subject Team Coordinator (Arts, Social Science and Humanities; ASHT), the incumbent provides focused support for the Arts, Social Science and Humanities subject team and activities across a broad range of disciplines.

Participates in the delivery of general reference and information services in the Department and is a member of a Subject Team. Performs other related duties as required.

Qualifications: The incumbent must possess the following qualifications:

  • Public service and instruction experience.
  • Experience with teaching and research methods.
  • Experience giving presentations.
  • Current knowledge on emerging information tools.
  • Experience with database software and other library applications.
  • Information on the provision of social networking technologies.
  • Experience in, or willingness to work in, a busy, complex service-oriented environment.
  • Good oral and written communication skills, with the ability to express complex information succinctly and clearly.
  • The proven ability to work effectively in a collaborative environment alongside Library staff, IT staff and the campus community to deliver services.
  • Excellent organizational skills and ability to manage effectively a varied workload and competing and changing priorities.
  • The ability to work on their own initiative.
  • A self-motivated learner with a track record of continually updating skills.
  • Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills;
  • Ability to work independently and effectively with technology in a fast-paced environment while coordinating competing priorities;
  • Ability to correctly interpret questions with clients to achieve mutually desired outcomes;
  • Ability to understand when to seek further information or escalate requests and issues;
  • Demonstrated accuracy, attention to detail and ability to prioritize tasks;
  • Strong written and oral communication;
  • Strong user-focused service orientation;
  • Evidence of initiative, innovation and flexibility to respond to workflow demands;
  • Ability to work cooperatively and effectively with supervisors and colleagues in a culturally diverse and rapidly changing environment;

  • Excellent interpersonal skills;
  • Is knowledgeable about all library services within other departments such as interlibrary loans and Course Reserves and can provide referrals in a timely fashion.
  • Remains current on trends and good practice in libraries and in information literacy, including scholarly communication, e-publishing, open access, digital collections, and Carleton University\xe2\x80\x99s institutional repository, etc.
Education and Experience: The above is normally acquired through:
  • The completion of a Bachelor of Information Technology/Information Resource Management, or a university degree and a Library Information & Technology diploma.
  • Five years of relevant library experience.
  • Knowledge of French would be considered an asset.
