Job Overview

We are looking for an Articling Student or a Summer Student to join our Edmonton team. Reporting to the Regional Legal Counsel of Western Canada, the Articling Student or Summer Student will be responsible to provide support to the western legal team. You\xe2\x80\x99ll gain experience with working in a Canada-wide operation while building connections
across our network of subsidiaries.

Duties

  • Provide support to the lawyer for all western subsidiaries in Alberta, British Columbia, Saskatchewan, Northwest Territories and Yukon for all legal matters;
  • Provide support to the lawyer for the implementation and upkeeping of multiple internal databases and corporate fillings for all western subsidiaries;
  • Preparing legal documents and notices for, and updating transactional documents with the most recently negotiated language;
  • Conduct legal research and legal writing on complex commercial matters;
  • Draft simple commercial contract based on precedent provided;
  • Review multiple type of commercial contracts to determine areas of risk for the corporation;
  • Attending and taking notes at meetings and assisting lawyers in collecting legal and factual documents;
  • Conduct searches and carry out investigations through internet, legal databases and other means;
  • Communicating with subsidiaries on inquiries, opposing counsel and other parties, clients, judicial administrative staff and vendors;
  • Transmitting legal correspondence to clients, witnesses and court officials by electronic filing, mail, fax or messenger;
  • Other duties assigned by the lawyer and assist other members of the team as needed;
  • Travel may be required from time to time
  • Successfully complete CPLED (PREP) requirements throughout the articling year (if articling student)
What you Bring
  • Clear and effective oral and written communication skills in English and French- not required but an asset
  • Highly composed: Respond calmly and performs steadily in a fast face environment
  • Attention to detail and a high level of accuracy
  • Strong interpersonal and organizational skills
  • Ability to meet deadlines and work under pressure
  • Proficient in Microsoft Work, Outlook, Excel, and Adobe software
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced, collaborative team environment
  • Adaptability to a changing work environment
  • Strong understanding or interest for contract law
Education and Experience
  • Have or currently completing a Law Degree from a recognized Law School
  • Approval from a Law Society or the Barreau du Qu\xc3\xa9bec to be an articling student
OR
  • 3rd year law student for Civil Law or 2nd year law student for Juris Doctor (J.D.): Official law school transcript to be provided during the interview
  • Work experience in a legal environment preferably in a law firm or in-house will be considered an asset but not necessary
  • Work experience in the construction industry will be considered an asset but not necessary
