Arena Operations Manager

About the Role:
Reporting directly to the Stephenville Gardens Commission, the Arena Operations Manager oversees the day-to-day operations of the arena and is accountable for ensuring the facility meets the highest standards of safety, efficiency, and customer service. This position requires both hands-on technical expertise and strong leadership abilities to effectively manage staff, user groups, and community partnerships.
Key Responsibilities:
Facility Operations & Maintenance
? Oversee the operation and maintenance of the arena refrigeration plant, ensuring it is properly maintained, safe, and compliant.
? Conduct routine inspections and preventative maintenance on all arena systems, including HVAC, plumbing, fire safety, sprinklers, kitchen suppression systems, Zamboni emissions, forklifts, AEDs, eyewash stations, CO monitors, and electrical components.
? Ensure compliance with all legislative, health and safety, and Workplace NL regulations.
? Perform or coordinate minor building repairs, janitorial, plumbing, carpentry, and electrical work as needed.
? Supervise ice installation, flooding, maintenance, and removal; troubleshoot and repair rink equipment as required.
Staffing & Administration
? Recruit, train, schedule, and supervise arena staff to ensure efficient daily operations.
? Encourage and model safe work practices while fostering a positive and collaborative workplace culture.
? Oversee administrative duties including office work, payroll, accounts payable/receivable, deposits, and general record-keeping.
? Prepare and deliver regular operational and financial reports to the Commission.
? Attend Commission meetings and provide professional recommendations regarding facility operations and improvements.
Community & User Engagement
? Schedule and manage all ice time, bookings, and events, ensuring fair access for local and regional user groups.
? Maintain strong, positive relationships with user groups, community organizations, and the Town of Stephenville Recreation Department.
? Proactively attract new user groups, tournaments, and outside rentals to maximize facility usage.
? Develop and maintain advertising and sponsorship opportunities to generate revenue.
? Collaborate with partners to promote programs, events, and facility opportunities.
Qualifications
? Power Engineer Class 4 or Refrigeration Operator Class B License (or equivalent) preferred.
? Previous experience in arena operations, including ice making and plant maintenance is considered an asset.
? Supervisory and staff management experience
? Strong financial literacy with knowledge of budgeting, payroll, and cost management.
? Computer proficiency, including scheduling software, Microsoft Office, and social media platforms.
? Excellent organizational, interpersonal, and communication skills.
? First Aid/CPR certification.
? Valid Class 5 Driver's License.
? Current criminal record and vulnerable sector checks.
? Knowledge of facility maintenance, including janitorial, plumbing, HVAC, carpentry, and electrical systems.
