Job Description

This is a term position until March 31, 2026



The University Archives within the Library houses UWinnipeg's historical and institutional records and a number of private collections of all media, including textual records, photographs, maps, plans, drawings and sound/moving image materials. It also houses the Rare Books Collection and the Western Canada Pictorial Index (WCPI). It is the responsibility of the Archives to make these holdings accessible to the University of Winnipeg and wider communities.



The

Archives Technician is a variable hour term

position, and the successful candidate would be responsible for arranging and describing a complete set of issues of Stylus magazine and then digitizing those issues


Responsibilities:




Acquire, arrange, and describe printed issues of Stylus magazine. Arrange for transfer of issues to Archives from CKUW storage. Arrange issues chronologically and house in labeled containers. Create standard-compliant description in Manitoba Archival Information Network (MAIN). Create Stylus digital collection. Scan each page of every issue according to established digitization standards. Assemble each scan into creation of digital issues. Perform optical character recognition (OCR) on each issue. Upload scans and OCR to CONTENTdm in creation of digital collection. Create descriptive metadata for each issue and link to digitized copy. Consult with Copyright Librarian on outstanding rights issues. Assist in contacting Stylus contributors to obtain permissions when needed. Upon completion of project, contribute to social media posts or media inquiries if requested. Facilitate cross-promotion with Stylus magazine and CKUW radio.

Qualifications:




Undergraduate degree and pursuing a Master's degree in Archival Studies, Information Studies, Indigenous Studies, History is preferred. Experience working in an archives or research environment. Experience arranging and describing records preferred. Digitization experience preferred. Experience with archival content management and description software preferred (e.g. CONTENTdm, AtoM). Knowledge of archives description and digitization standards and best practices preferred. Excellent communication skills. Strong organizational and time management skills. Attention to detail.

An equivalent combination of education, experience, skills, knowledge and abilities may be considered.




Condition(s) of Employment:




Must be legally entitled to work in Canada.

The salary range for this position will be from $20.57 to $28.40 hourly.
