JOB POSTING: ARCHIVAL CLERK, CORNWALL COMMUNITY MUSEUMCONTRACT: $23 /hr - 20 hrs/week WORK LOCATION: Cornwall Community Museum, Cornwall, Ontario The Stormont, Dundas & Glengarry Historical Society (SDGHS) is seeking a candidate for the position of managing the Archives, Digitization, & Research Centre at the Cornwall Community Museum. About the SD&G Historical Society Since 1920, the SD& G Historical Society has been collecting records that tell the story of our area from 1784 to the current day, including a large collection of photographic negatives, maps, historical documents, and materials about individuals, families, businesses, congregations, community organizations, and associations that contributed to the rich history of Cornwall and SD&G area. Since 1956 the SDG Historical Society has operated the Cornwall Community Museum which houses the history of Cornwall and the SDG Counties from 1784 to the current day. The Museum is located in a heritage house known as the Wood House at the foot of York Street in Lamoureux Park, Cornwall, Ontario. Position Summary The SD&G Historical Society (SDGHS) is seeking a motivated individual to manage activities in the Research Centre including cataloguing, filing, digitization, library books, and research. This is an in-person position and requires the candidate to work at the Museum. The candidate will work under the direction of the Senior Curator. Experience College or university degree, preferably in history, museum studies, libraries and archives, or a related field and/or 3+ years of experience working with document collections. Experience in the fields of Library Sciences, Archives and Records Management, Museum, or Arts Administration. A basic knowledge of archival methodology and techniques, including research, evaluation, handling, sorting, storing, and labelling cultural artifacts, documents, and digital files. Proficiency in Microsoft Office, Google Drive, and archival databases such as PastPerfect. Experience working with archival/museum collections, preferably with photograph or photographic negatives collections. Experience with photo editing software. Key Responsibilities Digitize collection and archive items. Conduct research on current collection items in order to produce more detailed database entries. Carry out a pre-inventory of the archives in order to estimate the volume to be preserved and to identify what needs to be pruned. Catalogue all records and artifacts using assigned standards. Photograph and scan items determined to be archival to add to the records database for identification, evaluation, and security purposes. Perform basic preservation activities to safeguard the archival materials. Perform other related duties as assigned. Job Requirements Ability to perform moderate physical activity, such as climbing stairs, lifting, kneeling, standing, or walking for periods of time. Excellent critical thinking, communication, organizational, and customer service skills. Ability to commit to an in-office role with flexible working hours. Excellent interpersonal and communication skills including the ability to prepare written reports. Ability to work independently without supervision. Familiarity with the history of our area is an asset. Valid Police background and Vulnerable Sector checks are required.
