Reporting to the Principal Heritage Planner, the Architectural Design Assistant will be primarily responsible for assisting heritage planning staff with the drafting of new urban design guidelines for HRMs proposed Heritage Conservation Districts located in Downtown Halifax and Downtown Dartmouth. The intern will also assist other teams within HRM Regional Planning and Strategic Projects Divisions with urban design and architectural analysis on a range of matters relating to new planning regulations and policies.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Provides assistance in the creation of an urban design manual for Heritage Conservation Districts, including all relevant research and analysis;
  • Creates architectural illustrations and design elements for municipal planning documents;
  • Provides technical advice and analysis to planning staff as part of the creation of new planning documents and the evaluation of planning applications;
  • Attends meetings with stakeholders; and
  • Conducts site visits and off-site tasks as required.
QUALIFICATIONS
Education and Experience:
  • Currently enrolled in a post-secondary university degree program in architecture or urban planning, preferably with an emphasis on built heritage or architectural history;
  • Experience using graphic design and publishing software such as Adobe Illustrator, Adobe InDesign, Sketchup, and Autodesk Revit; and
  • Experience working or volunteering in a heritage or urban design related field would be considered an asset.

  • Excellent communication and problem-solving skills
  • Demonstrated ability to take initiative and work in a team environment
  • Proficient in computer applications including Microsoft Excel, Word, and Outlook
  • Strong work ethic and a commitment to excellence
  • Demonstrated organizational and prioritization skills
  • Demonstrated high regard for quality, accuracy and attention to detail

WORK STATUS: Temporary, full-time (estimated May 8, 2023 \xe2\x80\x93 Sept 1, 2023)

HOURS OF WORK: Monday \xe2\x80\x93 Friday, 8:30 am \xe2\x80\x93 4:30 pm, 35 hours per week.

SALARY: $20.00 per hour

WORK LOCATION: 3rd Floor of Duke Tower (5251 Duke Street, Halifax)
