BASIC QUALIFICATIONS:
Must have a minimum education level of Grade 10.
Must have valid Class 'G' Drivers License.
Must have working at heights training certification.
Experience with tools: common hand tools, weed eater, shovel.
Knowledge of hazardous/noxious plants
Must be able to lift up to 50lbs

POSITION TITLE:
Arborist Assistant
REPORTING RELATIONSHIP:
Reports to and works under the direction and supervision of the Roads Foreman and/or the Climbing Arborist.
PURPOSE & SCOPE OF THE POSITION:
To assist the Climbing Arborist in the Management of vegetation maintenance operations and tree trimming activities as related to the Six Nations Public Works Departments within the policies and procedures established by the Six Nations of the Grand River for the Public Works Department.
KEY
DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:
Technical Functions
+ Monitors and ensures that the necessary preventative roadside maintenance is completed on the road allowance.
+ Vegetation control along all Six Nations roads and bridges.
+ Evaluating trees for disease and pest problems.
+ Performing all aspects of tree pruning and removal services safely and skillfully.
+ Removal of hazardous trees.
+ Rigging down limbs and control lowering ropes.
+ Provide tools to tree workers working at heights.
+ Properly maintains, prepares and operates all tools and equipment including chainsaws, brush cutter, chippers, aerial lifts, skid steer etc.
+ Performing routine maintenance and minor repairs to equipment.
+ Practice proper safety procedures.
+ Maintain clean profession working areas; garages, the yard and all other job sites.
+ Seasonal road and sidewalk Maintenance including the operation of sidewalk machines and snowplows to remove snow hazards.
+ Perform daily circle checks on all tools, equipment and vehicles being used.
+ Maintain safety protocol and utilize safety equipment.
Administrative Functions
+ Logging day to day operations and maintenance of work and equipment.
+ Maintains inventory of supplies, equipment and machinery within the department.
+ Maintain equipment according to manuals and have equipment re-safetied as per manufacturers' recommendation.
Communications Functions
+ Reports any malfunctions and problems to the Supervisor.
+ Maintain proper communication with staff to ensure projects are completed safely.
+ Control road and sidewalk traffic as needed by use of warning devices.
Other Functions
+ All other duties as assigned or deemed necessary as relates to the position.
+ Assist with the roads department when required.
+ Provides support to the Six Nations Emergency Response Plan by ensuring awareness of the Six Nations Emergency Response Plan and assists as instructed by the Director of Public Works
WORKING CONDITIONS:
Work involves extensive physical activity; long periods of standing; extreme seasonal conditions; requires some interaction with the public; subject to deadlines and interruptions; ability to take direction and perform duties with little supervision.
WORKING RELATIONSHIPS:
With the Public Works Foremen:
Receives direction, guidance and discusses plans, priorities or interacts to ensure tasks are done efficiently and effectively with Roads Foreman or designate.
With other staff members:
Courtesy, cooperation and teamwork with all staff.
KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS:

Chipper Safety and Operations.
First Aid Certificate is an asset.
Willingness to work towards becoming a certified Arborist.
Knowledge of small engines and diesel equipment maintenance.
Experience operating tractors and loader.
Operate sidewalk clearer (snow).
Ontario traffic Manual Book 7 training - traffic control.
Ability to work independently or as a team.
Must be willing to continue training as deemed necessary.
Willingness to obtain DZ license.
