Position Overview

Reporting to the Coordinator, Leisure Services in Aquatics, this supervisory position is responsible for the day-to-day operations and programs of aquatic facilities, including the seasonal operations of two outdoor pools. The work involves the supervision of staff involved in instructional and lifeguarding tasks; planning, coordination, implementation and evaluation of aquatic programs, services and special events; and development and delivery of staff safety seminars.

Examples of key responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

Assists in the direction of the daily operations of indoor and outdoor aquatic facilities; assumes responsibility for facility operations within defined limits of authority and action on assigned shifts, as directed. Plans, assigns, supervises and checks, directly or through direct reports, the work of staff engaged in aquatic instruction and lifeguarding work; evaluates the work performance of staff; participates in interviewing and selecting employees. Participates in the planning, scheduling, development and organization of aquatic programs; schedules, evaluates and recommends changes to a variety of instructional and recreational aquatic programs for all ages; monitors course registrations and makes required adjustments to program offerings; develops new programs and special events, as directed, and implements same upon approval; maintains currency in trends and developments in aquatic instruction. Coordinates and ensures for in service induction of staff in the understanding of life support systems and techniques, and departmental policies and procedures; establishes lifeguard swimming instructional and water safety training programs and defines standards of performance for lifeguards and instructors. Coordinates and edits seasonal facility brochures and aquatic section of the Recreation and Cultural Guide; promotes aquatic services, events and activities through various marketing tools and other media. Participates in budget preparation; monitors and tracks expenditures and variances; codes and approves invoices; makes purchase recommendations; and discusses significant variances with Supervisor. Maintains liaison with various community groups including swim clubs, boys and girls clubs, provincial resource centres, local schools and other organizations. Responds to aquatic related customer service and community enquiries, handles complaints regarding teaching methods, facility cleanliness and other related matters. Maintains a variety of records and reports; compiles statistics.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:

Knowledge of statutes and department policies and procedures applicable to the operation of aquatic facilities. Knowledge of the theory and practice of lifeguarding, artificial respiration, cardiopulmonary resuscitation and first aid. Knowledge of teaching methods and group leadership techniques emphasizing instruction in water safety and aquatic skills. Knowledge of the aquatic recreational needs and interests of the citizens in the community. Knowledge of the rules, regulations, procedures and policies governing the work performed. Ability to assign, supervise, check and participate in the work of and train staff engaged in aquatic instruction and lifeguard work and to conduct performance evaluations of same. Ability to contribute to the recruitment and hiring of new staff, including interviews. Ability to participate in planning, scheduling, developing, organizing and evaluating instruction and recreational aquatic programs. Ability to recommend changes to instructional and recreational aquatic programs and develop and implement new programs of instruction. Ability to plan and conduct in service training of staff. Ability to assume responsibility for facility operations within defined limits of authority and action on an assigned shift, as directed. Ability to prepare and maintain a variety of records, statistics and reports related to the work. Ability to prepare and administer budgets. Ability to deal effectively with staff, public and user groups on matters related to the work. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with officials, employees and patrons.

Qualifications and Experience:

Completion of a Diploma or Degree in community recreation leadership recreation management or related discipline supplemented by courses in first-aid, lifesaving, lifeguarding, aquatics instruction, and pool operation and maintenance OR an equivalent combination of training and experience Minimum of 5 years related experience in aquatics Minimum of 2 years related experience with supervisory responsibilities ###

LICENCES, CERTIFICATES AND REGISTRATIONS



Swim Instructor Certificate Lifesaving Society, Life Saving Instructor Certificate or equivalent Cardio-Pulmonary Resuscitation Certificate - Level "C" & AED National Lifeguard Award - Pool Option Valid Class 5 Driver's Licence for the Province of British Columbia ###

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS



Pool Operator - Level 1 & 2 Emergency First Aid National Lifeguard Instructor/Examiner

Duties are primarily performed in an office environment within an aquatic facility and may also include some limited exposure to disagreeable conditions or hazards.

Salary Range: $45.27 - $53.44/hr
