Overview

Apprentice Electrician (Industrial) - Inuvik, NT

This is Apprentice duties of the Journeyperson level work in the repair and maintenance of electrical generation and control equipment, along with auxiliary equipment such as electric motors, transformers, relays, electronic governors, voltage regulators, and other NTPC electrical systems in diesel, solar, natural gas, wind turbine and/or hydro generating stations. All work shall be carried out in accordance with the Canadian Electrical Code and Northwest Territories Power Corporation policies and standards.

Responsibilities

  • Always work safely, adhere to all aspects of the NTPC Health & Safety and Environmental programs, comply with all rules & regulations, and continually practice health & safety while performing any duties.
  • Completes work to obtain Journeyperson level Industrial Electrician certification, preferably with an interprovincial seal.
  • Obtains experience troubleshooting diesel and natural gas genset electrical systems including the ability to set electronic governors and voltage regulators unsupervised in the field.
  • Obtains experience installing, maintaining and commissioning of gensets in the range 150 kW to 1400 kW.
  • Work within a CMMS work order system for preventative and corrective workorders for the maintenance and repairs for all electrical systems, AC and DC single phase and three phase electric motors and assists with scheduled overhauls of diesel and Natural gas electric generation sets, Solar and Wind Turbines. Planned maintenance includes, but is not limited to, cleaning and testing of windings, exciter diode bridges, replacement of bearings and checking and torquing of wire and cable connections, inspecting and testing of electrical equipment, voltages range from 24V to 25KV, checking and torque of wire and cable connections.
  • Maintains and repairs auxiliary generator equipment and devices. Planned maintenance includes, but is not limited to, calibration of automatic and manual voltage regulators, generator protection devices, metering and cleaning and checking all wiring and terminations in generator control cubicles. Setting and adjustment of electronic governors is also required.
  • Calibration of all engine mounted alarm, indication and shutdown devices, as well as cleaning and checking all wiring and relays in engine control cabinets.
  • Maintenance and repairs to high and low voltage switchgear and breakers. This involves cleaning breaker circuits and motor control centres, cleaning and calibration of high voltage breakers, torquing buss bar bolts and checking wiring and terminations.
  • Maintenance and repairs to Corporation buildings (heating, air conditioning, fire alarms, lighting, etc.). You may be required to install circuitry in buildings or pieces of equipment, which may require the use of tech cable or conduit.

Qualifications
  • High School Diploma or equivalent GED with a minimum passing grade in each of the following courses: English 20-2 or Literacy 30; Math 10C; and Science 10;
or show you have already received a passing mark of 70% or higher on the Trades Entrance Exam #5. Must include transcripts with your application.
  • Must have a valid NWT Class 5 driver\xe2\x80\x99s license (or equivalent).
  • Experience in construction or electrical work would be an asset.
  • Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively, both in written and verbal form.
  • Demonstrated ability to work with minimal supervision.
  • Must be willing/able to attend trade courses/school when required throughout the apprentice program.
  • Must provide satisfactory criminal background check.
  • Must provide at least two supervisor references.
This position is located in Inuvik, NT. Salary for this position starts at $28.44/hr. and increases as the apprenticeship progresses (as per Collective Agreement); in addition, a location allowance of approximately $11,808 per year.
