CBC Radio in Yellowknife is looking for an experienced Announcer/Operator for The Weekender. It is the weekend morning radio program broadcasting to audiences in Northwest Territories and Yukon. Reporting to the Managing Editor, the Announcer/Operator is responsible for finding, researching, preparing and presenting interviews, packaged items, continuity and news stories, and operating and directing for the program.

You will be working in a deadline-driven environment that requires close cooperation and consultation with other staff, while adhering to CBC\'s Journalistic Standards and Practices.

You will work closely with our current affairs team in production of the Weekender. You may also be asked to contribute to our other English-language radio programs: Trailbreaker, Trail\xe2\x80\x99s End, and Northwind.

This is a 12-month temporary position, beginning on November 20.

We are looking for a candidate with the following:


  • Post secondary education in a relevant field or equivalent years of experience.

  • Minimum three years experience in daily broadcast production in News and Current Affairs.

  • Excellent on-air presentation skills.

  • Demonstrated ability to perform live, e.g., public speaking, and skill at ad-libbing.

  • Strong interviewing skills.

  • A critical thinker with strong editorial judgment.

  • Strong writing skills.

  • An understanding and awareness of issues and events particular to the region; specifically, experience as a Northerner, native or with connections (residency, work, travel) in the Northern community.

  • Strong computer skills and experience with forming and maintaining Social Media networks using external platforms like Youtube, Facebook, Twitter etc.

  • Mature, positive attitude and an excellent ability to contribute to a team environment.

  • Demonstrated ability to perform at a high level in a high pressure, tight deadline environment.

  • Valid driver\'s license.
