The Animal Control Officer supports PAW's municipal animal control contracts through humane bylaw enforcement, responsive customer service, and community programs. You'll protect public and animal safety while serving as a calm, professional problem-solver in the field, reporting to the Animal Control Team Leader. Key Responsibilities
Enforce municipal bylaws and fulfill all animal control duties under PAW's contracts.
Conduct park patrols and field investigations in all weather conditions.
Sell and record dog licenses (at assigned locations and door-to-door).
Pick up and transport stray/owned animals safely and humanely.
Educate the public and represent PAW professionally at functions and events.
Maintain accurate logs/reports; attend monthly animal control meetings.
Clean and maintain vehicles, equipment, and supplies.
Assist crematorium operations as needed.
Support PAW's charitable activities and community programs.
Follow end-of-day procedures to secure facilities.
Perform other duties as assigned and work toward assigned goals.
Qualifications & Skills
Familiarity with animal behavior
Bylaw/law-enforcement education an asset.
Strong oral and written communication; diplomatic, tactful, and professional with the public and partner agencies.
De-escalation/conflict resolution skills (training/experience an asset).
Comfortable with IT systems, reporting, and data entry.
Valid, clean driver's license (required).
Eligible to be sworn in as a bylaw enforcement officer by municipalities (required).
Physically fit--able to handle large dogs and patrol on foot for extended periods.
Bilingualism (English/French) considered an asset.
Strong desire to serve the public and uphold PAW's mission.
Working Conditions
Based at the shelter, with most time spent in the field (vehicle-based calls and on-foot park patrols). Exposure to all weather conditions; occasional handling of fractious animals and challenging situations. Scheduling may include holidays, evenings, weekends, and on-call assignments.
