POSITION SUMMARY



The successful candidate will be responsible for enforcing the Municipal Animal Care & Control by-laws and the provincial Dog Owner's Liability Act.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities



Promotes responsible pet ownership through the delivery of services to the public, including field and shelter services. Conducts field inspections and investigations to ensure compliance with municipal by-laws and DOLA , including patrols of city streets and parks. Responds to public inquiries, investigates complaints and requests for service. Enforces legislation through issuing notices and orders and commencing proceedings under the Provincial Offences Act (Part I and Part III offences). Documents enforcement activities, prepares reports and maintains records to a standard suitable for potential use in court proceedings. Attends court to present evidence and support charges laid. Provides humane and skilled capture, handling and restraint of wild and domestic animals, including sick and injured animals, both in the shelter and field/community. Transports animals to the shelter, veterinary clinic or, as directed to other locations. Maintains animal handling equipment and vehicles in a clean, sanitary, and organized fashion. Works with other agencies (i.e., police, fire, Provincial Animal Welfare Services, social agencies, etc.) in a cooperative and professional manner. Provides emergency on-call response outside of regular working hours. Other duties as assigned, including but not limited to, daily animal care, intake, claims, exterior maintenance.

Qualifications



Post-secondary education in law enforcement and/or animal care or an equivalent knowledge demonstrated through previous experience. Demonstrated knowledge of municipal animal care and control by-laws and DOLA. Experience in the use of computerized records software and Microsoft Office applications. Excellent written and verbal communication skills that demonstrate a high level of tact and diplomacy. Strong problem solving and conflict resolution skills. Must be available to work weekends, statutory holidays, and on-call services. Must possess and be able to maintain a valid Class "G" driving license. Must be a team player and willing to perform a variety of duties. Moderate to heavy physical effort is required. Ability to lift 18 kg (40lbs) and pull 34 kg (100lbs)
