This role is enterprise-wide in scope and reports to the Director, Sustainability Strategy, Disclosure & Impact. The Analyst supports the Sustainability team with quantitative and qualitative research, analysis, reporting and communications across a broad range of sustainability topics including sustainability disclosures, sustainability strategy, climate change, environmental and social risk, sustainable finance, operational sustainability, and emerging sustainability topics. The holder of the role has subject matter expertise in sustainability/Environmental, Social and Governance (ESG) and draws on knowledge and experience in sustainability and climate change, or in research-focused roles with a demonstrated interest in sustainability. A technical and research background is preferred. The role requires someone with strong problem solving, communication and project management skills.

KEY ACCOUNTABILITIES

Sustainability and climate reporting and communications

Monitoring external sustainability reporting frameworks and standards (e.g. Global Reporting Initiative, SASB, Integrated Reporting, Taskforce on Climate-related Financial Disclosures (TCFD, regulatory disclosure requirements) and identifying areas of opportunity.

Preparing, as part of a broader team, content for BMO's sustainability and climate disclosures, including the implementation of identified changes and/or improvements and incorporating best practices.

Maintaining strong disclosure procedures and controls and supporting implementation of sustainability reporting software solutions.

Implementing processes for coordinating an enterprise response to information requests from sustainability rating agencies and/or analysts who assess BMO's sustainability performance (e.g. DJSI, CDP, Sustainalytics, ISS, MSCI, Moody's, FTSE4Good, Corporate Knights and others).

Supporting development of public facing statements and policies on sustainability and climate matters informed by research and in collaboration with internal subject-matter experts, to satisfy market expectations.

Development of thought leadership and publications, including support with the BMO Sustainability Leaders podcast and marketing.

Sustainability and climate analytics

Managing data and information, conducting data analysis and providing insights to support business decision making processes. Includes strong data management practices and the ability to communicate quantitative analysis internally and externally through written, visual and verbal presentation.

Assisting with greenhouse gas (GHG) accounting for scope 1, scope 2 and scope 3 emissions quantification using methodologies from the GHG Protocol.

Assisting with GHG accounting and methodology development for BMO's scope 3 "financed emissions" using methodologies from the Partnership for Carbon Accounting Financials. Includes manual data collection, validation, development of excel-based models and partnering with Technology & Operations to automate established calculations.

Working with external assurance providers in relation to sustainability and climate reporting and GHG quantification.

Sustainability and climate strategy and program governance

Monitoring sustainability and climate trends and emerging topics to identify areas for improvement of BMO's sustainability program and performance and to develop strategies to ensure consistency with market practice, and to communicate with stakeholders both internal and external, maintaining BMO's leadership position in sustainability and ESG.

Researching sustainability and climate topics to support development of policies, programs, strategies, monitoring, reporting, thought leadership and/or marketing.

Actively participating in and representing BMO in international industry associations such as the UNEP FI and working groups such as Partnership for Carbon Accounting Financials (PCAF).

Supporting with administration of BMO's sustainability program and governance of internal management committees and forums including developing meeting agendas, compiling meeting materials and taking and distributing meeting minutes.

Developing strong relationships and collaborating with internal stakeholders (e.g. LOBs and Corporate Areas) in order to enhance internal awareness of the value of sustainability and advance sustainability and climate-related practices.

Assistance in developing and executing such other sustainability related programs as may be needed.

Qualifications:

Minimum requirements are a degree in a related field such as sustainability, business, economics, engineering, accounting. Masters-level preferred

Minimum 1-3 years' experience in sustainability, ESG or a related field

Experience and/or advanced knowledge in GHG quantification, sustainability reporting, impact measurement and data analytics.

Experience in banking or finance sector an asset

Strong technical and research background

Strong written and verbal communication skills

Strong Excel, PowerPoint and Word skills

Strong relationships management skills

Strong critical thinking, problem solving skills and ability to navigate ambiguous situations.
