The opportunity:
Reporting to the Vice President, Product Solutions, the Analyst, Investment Product Research will be primarily responsible for conducting independent analysis on mutual funds, ETFs, and private/alternative investment strategies. The incumbent will play a critical role in several key initiatives for the Products & Platforms team, including but not limited to: investment manager search, selection, and ongoing monitoring, product approvals, product shelf management, and product recommendations.
The incumbent will conduct qualitative and quantitative analysis on investment products to assist the VP, Product Solutions in the creation of product research reports and recommendations, leveraging information obtained from performance databases, manager interviews, due diligence questionnaires, marketing materials, and offering documents. The Analyst, Investment Product research will also assist in the creation, maintenance and dissemination of product information.
Key responsibilities include:
  • Maintaining relationships with asset managers and product issuers, and acting as the key research lead for a subset of the Canadian asset manager universe, serving as the principal liaison between this group and Wellington-Altus.
  • Coordinating and conducting manager due diligence interviews for the purposes of initial due diligence and ongoing monitoring.
  • Working with various members of the Products & Platforms team including Discretionary Portfolio Management & Support and Platform Solutions as the investment product subject matter expert to assist in the design, construction, and promotion of customized portfolio strategies and solution to meet specific client needs and objectives.
  • Serving as a subject matter expert on product related matters and serve as the primary contact for product related support needs for internal partners and IA teams.
  • Supporting Advisor teams through the development and maintenance of KYP collateral for approved and recommended products.
  • Product Due Diligence
    • Conducting quantitative analysis on performance and cost of select investment products to analyze their attractiveness relative to their benchmarks and peer universe.
    • Conducing qualitative analysis to make assessments of firm quality, manager skill, source of return, product value proposition/differentiation, and manager style.
  • Ongoing Monitoring
    • Leveraging performance databases and quantitative tools to develop and implement performance monitoring of the Wellington-Altus product shelf on a quarterly basis.
  • Product Content Development/Management
    • Collaborating with the Product Content Manager to deliver product-focused materials to support the growth of Wellington-Altus corporate programs.
  • Performing other duties as assigned.

The ideal candidate will possess:
  • A bachelor’s degree or diploma in business administration, accounting, finance, or similar field of study.
  • A minimum of 4 years of relevant financial services/investment industry experience.
    • Strong financial industry knowledge and product understanding would be an asset.
  • Exceptional analytical and decision-making skills, with a demonstrated ability to think critically.
  • A demonstrated ability to develop and communicate content on complex financial products and strategies.
  • High attention to detail and organizational skills, with the ability to handle multiple priorities in a fast-paced work environment.
  • Strong presentation skills.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Strong interpersonal skills, including the ability to engage with internal and external stakeholders.
  • An ability to independently prioritize and accomplish tasks with minimal supervision.
  • Strong financial industry knowledge and product understanding.
  • Experience using Morningstar, Evestment, Bloomberg, and/or other investment performance databases is an asset.
