About the Common Law Section of the Faculty of Law

Over the past 20 years, the Common Law Section of the Faculty of Law at the University of Ottawa has become a national and global leader in many fields. We are the only law school to offer a common law degree in both English and French, and our Faculty is one of the most accomplished in the country. We are an engaged Faculty and we have a strong culture of public engagement. We also have a strong bond with the legal community in Ottawa and a special relationship with the Supreme Court of Canada.

We are leaders -- leaders in research, leaders in the profession and leaders in our community. On any given day, members of our Faculty may be seen testifying before a Parliamentary committee, providing expert commentary in the media or contributing to public policy debates on the issues of the day. Position purpose:

Reporting to the Executive Director, Advancement & Engagement, Common Law, the Alumni and Community Engagement Lead plans, develops and implements an alumni and community engagement program with the primary purpose to establish and grow a strong culture of affinity and engagement among uOttawa alumni, future alumni and strategic community, government and industry partners. The Lead raises awareness of faculty successes and stimulates collaborative opportunities between the faculty and its community of alumni, future alumni and industry partners.

In this role, your responsibilities will include:

  • Identifies, engages and cultivates relationships with strategically curated alumni and community/industry stakeholders.
  • Actively engages alumni and community/industry partners to involve them in campus life. This includes aligning participants with engagement tools such as but not limited to judging student competitions, mentoring students, creating partnerships with research groups, speaking opportunities and hiring uOttawa student and alumni talent.
  • With the objective to enhance the Customer Lifetime Value (CLV) between the University and its external partners, the incumbent analyses, designs, implements and manages faculty external engagement programming. Reviews and critically assesses existing engagement programming, taking into account specific characteristics such as history, culture, longevity and alumni and community/industry partner dynamics.
  • With the objective to provide strategic storytelling, curates, creates and manages, along with the Faculty's Digital Communications Officer, selected digital marketing content on social media platforms targeted at alumni and community/industry markets
What you will bring:
  • Bachelor's degree in communications, business administration or other relevant field
  • Knowledge of the University of Ottawa's mandate, mission, objectives and culture
  • 3 - 5 years' experience in public and/or alumni relations
  • Experience in human resource management
  • Proven abilities in building collaborative and successful working relationships with a wide variety of stakeholders
  • Superior interpersonal and communication skills, strong listening skills
  • Strong organizational skills and proven ability to prioritize multiple tasks
  • Demonstrated initiative and self-starting qualities
  • Experience in the production of communications material and ability to effectively use social media, experience with web page creation
  • Knowledge of computer based methods, techniques and software to develop documents, reports and presentations and retrieve information and data.
  • Required to occasionally travel, work nights and weekends
  • Superior communication skills in French and English (verbal and written)
  • Must be able to exercise professional discretion
