The Opportunity
The Alberta SPCA is seeking two
Peace Officer's (APO 1)
to support our mission of animal well-being in Alberta. The ideal candidate possesses knowledge of livestock and companion animals, with experience in law enforcement or animal-related education preferred. Alignment with our mission of humane treatment for all animals is essential.
Reporting to the Provincial Supervisor of Alberta Protection Services, the Peace Officer will investigate complaints of animals in distress and take appropriate actions, including legal action, within the scope of their legal authority, in accordance with the Animal Protection Act. Duties consist of enforcement of the Alberta Animal Protection Act, conducting investigations, file documentation, court appearances and travelling throughout Alberta.
We're seeking Officers to cover zones across Central, Northern, and Western Alberta. Candidates must be able to commute to one of our designated offices (Edmonton, Red Deer, or Okotoks) as required.
Successful candidates must work a 9-hour daytime shift, participate in an on-call rotation, and be available for evenings, weekends, and holidays as needed. They must also be able to meet the physical demands of this role.

Qualifications and Requirements
Applicants must meet the criteria required to obtain Alberta Peace Officer status. This may include:
Currently (or recently) possessing a Community Peace Officer (CPO) Level 1 or APO 1 appointment.
Possessing current or recent enforcement experience with the Edmonton Police Service (EPS), Calgary Police Service (CPS), or the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP).
Minimum of two years of same/similar practical experience.
A diploma in Law Enforcement will be considered as an asset.
Familiarity with livestock such as Cattle, Horses, Pigs, Sheep, and Goats, as well as companion animals.
Must successfully pass and maintain an RCMP enhanced reliability security clearance as a condition of employment.
Must have a class 5 drivers' license and provide us with a clean Driver's Abstract as a condition of employment.
Ability to handle high stress situations and be able to think on their feet.
Ability to manage sensitive situations with both mental resilience and emotional intelligence, navigating them with empathy and professionalism.
Working Conditions
Be able to work a 9-hour, daytime shift, with a 1/2-hour lunch, with a possibility of overtime. Must be able to work weekly on-call rotational schedule.
Be able to lift and carry up to 50 lbs.
Daily travel throughout their designated jurisdictions throughout the province.
Willingness to be called out on days off.
Willingness to attend other Peace Officers areas when needed.
Willingness to join committees to help promote and protect animals within Alberta
