The Role
We're seeking a
Legislative Reporter
to join our newsroom in Edmonton. Based inside the Legislature, you'll cover the heart of Alberta politics, report on key issues shaping the province, and help guide our bureau's editorial direction.This role is suited for a driven journalist who thrives in a fast-paced environment, can break stories quickly, and has a strong understanding of Alberta's political landscape.
What You'll Do
Write sharp, accurate, and engaging news copy on tight deadlines.
Attend press conferences, scrums, and media events to deliver timely reporting.
Use FOIP/ATIP and other investigative tools to dig deeper into stories.
Oversee the work of other reporters and contributors.
Collaborate with editors on story assignments, priorities, and newsroom goals.
Contribute to shaping the editorial direction of our Legislature coverage.
Maintain a professional presence on social media while engaging readers.
Uphold the Western Standard's editorial principles, independence, and brand.
What We're Looking For
5-8 years of newsroom experience (legislative/political reporting is a strong asset).
Degree in Journalism or Communications preferred (not required).
Proven portfolio of published news articles.
Excellent writing, editing, and research skills.
Strong understanding of media process and political reporting.
A self-starter with passion for breaking stories and holding decision-makers accountable.
