Summary
The County of Stettler is seeking an experienced, community-minded Agricultural Fieldman to lead our agricultural services team. This position is responsible for managing a range of agricultural programs, including vegetation management, pest control, soil conservation, and extension services. The Agricultural Fieldman will provide guidance to the Agricultural Services Board (ASB), oversee seasonal and full-time staff, and ensure programs meet both legislative requirements and the needs of local landowners.
Key Responsibilities
Leadership & Advisory

• Serve as an advisor to the Agricultural Services Board (ASB) by preparing reports, policy recommendations, and agenda items.
• Respond to agricultural-related questions and concerns from farmers, landowners, and the public.
• Lead ASB and Council-directed initiatives related to environmental sustainability and interdepartmental cooperation.

Supervision & Field Operations

• Supervise and support the Assistant Agricultural Fieldman, seasonal staff, and contractors (e.g., Weed Inspectors, Sprayer Operators, Parks Mowers).
• Oversee agricultural field operations and ensure compliance with Alberta legislation, including the Weed Control Act, Agricultural Pests Act, Soil Conservation Act, and Animal Health Act.
• Conduct pest, weed, and soil conservation inspections and maintain certification as a Pesticide Applicator.
• Support landowners with advice on sustainable farming practices and land stewardship.

Legislation & Administration

• Monitor and stay informed about changes in provincial regulations and industry best practices.
• Work with agricultural research organizations and regional partners to support local initiatives.
• Oversee equipment rental programs, manage records, and support grant applications and funding partnerships.

Knowledge & Attributes

• Strong communication and interpersonal skills to engage with staff, stakeholders, and the public.
• Solid understanding of vegetation management, crop and weed identification, and land management.
• Familiarity with Microsoft Office.
• Strong organizational skills and ability to work both independently and as part of a team.
• Experience with budgeting, record-keeping, and program administration.
• Ability to maintain confidentiality and demonstrate sound judgment.

Working Environment

• This position involves regular outdoor work and requires the ability to perform physical tasks, including lifting and carrying materials or equipment weighing up to 23 kilograms (50 pounds). Candidates must be able to work in varying weather conditions and navigate uneven terrain as part of field inspections and operational duties.
• Operation of County vehicles, ATVs, boats, and pesticide equipment is required.
• Employees must follow County health and safety procedures, wear appropriate PPE, and promote a safe and respectful work environment.

Requirements
Preferred Qualifications

• Diploma or degree in Agriculture, Environmental Science, or a related field (or equivalent experience).
• 5 years of progressive experience in agricultural industry
• Valid Class 5 driver's license required.
