Who You Are



Are you a member of African, Caribbean, or Black (ACB) communities? Do you have strong local connections with diverse networks and communities of ACB men

and non-binary people? (

including: cisgender, Transgender/Trans, straight/heterosexual, gay, bi, same-gender loving, and queer men)
Do you understand the impacts of colonization and systemic oppressions (such as racism and homo/bi/trans/interphobia) on healthcare, health equity and wellness for people and communities? Are you interested in delivering community-centered and community-led activities to empower, support, affirm ACB people impacted by HIV/AIDS, Hepatitis C (HCV) and substance use? Are you an established self-starter who works well in collaborative settings and independently? Are you excited to bring your creativity, insights, leadership skills forward to deliver peer training, peer-led mentorship opportunities and health/wellness programming in support of community wellbeing?

What You Will Do



In our work, we understand that systemic oppressions (like racism) place some communities at increased systemic risk of acquiring HIV, acquiring Hepatitis C, or certain impacts of using substances.

We are primarily looking to connect with ACB menand non-binary people of all orientations (same-gender loving, straight/heterosexual, gay, bisexual, queer +) through this role because we understand these communities are often placed at increased systemic risk - while also experiencing health inequities - due to intersecting experiences of oppression.
This role centers peers, who are people with lived/living experience and expertise. In this role, you'll collaborate with the project's 2SGBTQI+ Community Engagement & Training Coordinator and other collaborators to deliver a peer training program for ACB and GBTQ+ community members.

You'll then work with trained peers who have been hired as project staff to connect and engage with ACBGBTQ+ community members to:

improve access to healthcare increase access and connections to health-related and other resources support individual and community wellness
You will also:

Collaborate with diverse partners to:

connect with diverse ACBGBTQ+ community members identify barriers affecting individual and community access to sexual health and other services, supports, information and resources identify related community priorities
Collaborate with diverse partners to engage in strategic promotion to reach ACBGBGTQ+ communities at diverse social locations and encourage Peer Pathways Training Program uptake

Collaborate with diverse partners to deliver and evaluate the third cycle of the Peer Pathways Training Program

Support Peer Pathways Training Program participants in the training experience to co-create meaningful engagement and empowerment opportunities and support peer success through the delivery of knowledge, capacity and skill-building activities

Collaborate with interestholders to interview, hire and successfully onboard Peer Connectors

Collaborate with trained Peer Connectors and other interestholders to

deliver and evaluate peer-led community outreach activities increase individual and community access to sexual health, general healthcare and other relevant services, supports, resources, information and referrals
Complete project reporting requirements

What you will bring



Lived/living experience and expertise within African, Caribbean, Black and GBTQ+ (specifically gay, bi, Trans, queer men and non-binary people who have sex with men) communities

Capacity building and community connection skills that:

improve healthcare access, promote health equity improve wellness outcomes related to sexual health (including HIV, Hepatitis C & STBBIs - sexually transmitted and blood-borne infections) improve wellness outcomes related to harm reduction/substance use (including HIV and Hepatitis C)
Strong group engagement, interpersonal, facilitation, communication, and presentation skills with the ability to effectively resolve conflict and engage in crisis intervention if/as needed

Strong understanding of the connected impacts of stigma and systemic oppressions on ACBGBTQ+ communities of all HIV, Hepatitis C, STBBI statuses and substance use experiences

Experience with systems navigation, identifying service access pathways, facilitating culturally-affirming care access, and developing supportive relationships with service partners and community organizations

Strong understanding of the multi-layered connections between food security, income security, housing, health (including mental health)

Commitment to solution-focused and community-forward approaches

Demonstrated ability to build trust relationships and engage with community members across diverse lived experiences

Knowledge of and experience with successfully using community development and community mobilization approaches

A detail-oriented approach to collecting, collating and reporting qualitative and quantitative data; familiarity with database use an asset

Must be able to work some evenings and weekends when required in a variety of social and physical settings

A valid driver's license and access to a reliable vehicle is an asset

First Aid/CPR, BLS and Naloxone training considered an asset

A satisfactory Vulnerable Sector Check (VSC)
