To apply, please provide a resume and a one-page cover letter.
This position is part of the Canada Summer Jobs Program. Applicants must be 15 to 30 years of age at the start of employment to qualify. This job is dependent on outside funding. This is a seasonal position. Training will be May 7 and 8, and we will be open to the public May 9 through September 7. Clean-up will be September 8 and 9. If employees need to return to university or other commitments before September, an earlier end date is possible. (Later start dates aren't possible, but holidays mid-season can be arranged if other staff are able to cover tours.) Weekends are required, as most tourists visit on weekends. We are closed Mondays. Shifts typically run from 8:45 to 4:15.
Those with a degree in business or museum studies are especially welcome to apply. Candidates with a background in palaeontology, geology, biology, art, education, history, and archaeology are also welcome - we take a multi-disciplinary approach to our dinosaurs and artefacts!
Devil's Coulee Dinosaur & Heritage Museum is a small non-profit in Warner, Alberta. We give interpretive, educational tours of the Devil's Coulee Dinosaur Museum and out at Devil's Coulee Dinosaur Fossil Site. This is Canada's first official dinosaur egg nesting site. We provide the only public tours, on behalf of the Royal Tyrrell Museum of Palaeontology. Parts of the site have been excavated by notable palaeontology experts such as Dr. Phillip J. Currie, and Wendy Sloboda. Our museum is also unique, as we allow visitors to touch many of the objects.
Warner is a village between Lethbridge and Writing-on-Stone Provincial Park, a perfect base for anyone who loves hiking and the vast outdoors. We offer a nominal monthly housing allowance to help employees who will need to rent in the area. There is free parking, a casual dress code, and a 10% staff discount in the gift shop.
The main responsibilities of this role will be advertising and events planning, to increase awareness of and visitors to Devil's Coulee's Dinosaur Museum and Fossil Site. This role will be 30 hours/week, in-person.
The first half of the season will focus on helping out with field trips while scheduling visits for summer camp programs and seniors' groups. When needed, you will help lead field trips, day-camps, and tour groups as part of the museum's team of interpreters. This practical experience will also help provide more targeted and effective advertising for the museum's activities and programs.
Bachelor's degree or higher very strongly preferred. Previous experience in advertising, marketing, establishing a social media presence, and/or events planning is required. Duties include: advertising events scheduled for our 30th anniversary, cold contacting local groups and businesses to set up tours or partnerships, leading museum tours, regularly posting on the museum's Facebook and Instagram pages, conducting market research, building the museum's YouTube channel with content reviewed by the Executive Director before posting. Other responsibilities include: free online advertising, and seeking out opportunities for radio, podcast, and TV interviews, as well as finding opportunities for print advertising, and coordinating distribution of paper brochures. Having a network of existing contacts in tourism, heritage, or non-profit is an asset.
You will engage with diverse groups, including children, families, and seniors, providing tailored and interactive experiences. You will be shown how to complete sales, and guest records. First Aid certification, a Criminal Record Check, proficiency with technology, and a Driver's License and personal vehicle are required.
Applications will be reviewed, and interview requests sent out in March and April.
