The mission of Project Kampfire is to empower youth to explore, think critically, connect with their communities, and to make the most of life for themselves and others. Our mission drives our programming while having fun, being safe, and nurturing growth. Our focus is youth ages 9-17. Our summer camp, Kamp Kiwanis, was founded in 1951, and offers a summer camp experience at a 100% subsidy for every youth who attends. Our outdoor school program is designed to increase environmental literacy, awareness, and action by immersing youth in hands-on learning experiences in nature.
We are currently seeking an energetic and inspirational Outdoor Program Leader/Camp Coordinator and Adventure Coordinator to join our team from March until the end of August, with the opportunity for employment until the end October. This is a diverse role which changes between the different seasons. Throughout both seasons you will work closely with the staff team to provide fun and meaningful programs to all participants and clients of Project Kampfire. You will help run our outdoor school and summer camp programs (see specific job responsibilities below).
This is a seasonal position in an outdoor setting where staff are required to live on site in provided staff accommodation, excluding breaks between sessions. There is an opportunity to live on site during breaks. Staff accommodation includes meals provided during working hours.
DAYS OF WORK
Staff will be working approximately 5 days a week with long work days (16 hours consecutively) Monday to Friday from March until the end of June. In July and August, staff will be working approximately 8 days with at least 2 full days off in between. Work includes irregular hours, evenings and weekends. Days of work may shift due to changing circumstances.
GENERAL JOB RESPONSIBILITIES:
? Perform regular cleaning tasks to ensure the site adheres to a high standard of
cleanliness
? Ensure the safety of participants (physically and emotionally) including but not limited to
general supervision and problem solving
? Work as part of a team and independently in a variety of outdoor and indoor
environments
? Develop and lead outdoor recreation activities (i.e. archery, shelter building, camp wide
games, etc)
? 24 hour supervision of participants including sleeping in the same room or building when
required
? Additional ongoing development, maintenance, set up and take down of program
materials
? Enforce and follow Project Kampfire Policies and Procedures
? Occasionally support food service staff making meals, serving food, and other kitchen
duties
? Other tasks that contribute to the success of programs as needed
ROLE SPECIFIC RESPONSIBILITIES:
? Maintain facilities; clean equipment after use, ensure supplies are stored properly
at the end of each use, supplies are well inventoried, and general equipment
maintenance is performed
? Organize and lead day hikes in Kananaskis and on site (or adjacent land) overnight
camping trips in accordance with the Alberta Camping Association guidelines
? Lead and develop programming in nature such as walks, sit spots, games, etc.
? Assist with Project Kampfire (Kamp Kiwanis) leadership programs when applicable
? Check in campers and ride the bus with participants to and from Calgary in the
summer
? Lead and assist with various summer camp activities (archery, hikes, camping
trips, campfire songs, canoeing, wide games, crafts, etc.)
REQUIRED ATTRIBUTES
? Be able to work long days with irregular hours including evenings and weekends
? Willing to live outside the city and on site during the work week
? Eager to work in an outdoor environment for large portions of the day and night
? Strong communication, conflict resolution and leadership skills
? Proven track record working independently and in a team environment
? Mature, positive and responsible attitude
? Enjoy living and cooperating in community setting
QUALIFICATIONS
? Minimum of 18 years of age by the start of employment
The following certifications OR willingness to acquire:
o Outdoor Council of Canada (OCC) Field Leader (Hiking) and Overnight
o Wilderness First Aid (40 hours) certification or willingness to acquire
? Police Information Check and Vulnerable Sector Search?specific to Project Kampfire
(employment is conditional upon receiving this)
? Minimum 1 season of experience working with youth in an overnight setting is required
(i.e. summer camp, overnight educational programs, group homes, or equivalent)
? Experience in educational, recreational, or other youth programs in an outdoor setting
? Camping experience is required
? Working towards or completion of post-secondary education in child or youth care,
education, kinesiology, outdoor pursuits, recreation, or a related field is preferred
? Any additional certifications, including but not limited to Bronze Cross or National
Lifeguard and Paddle Canada Instructor
