Position Overview The Department of Faculty Services within the Schulich School of Engineering is currently seeking a Full-time Temporary Relief Advancing Technologies Technician for approximately 16 months. This full-time position reports to the Manager, Strategic Projects in the Schulich School of Engineering. There is a high level of job complexity with high workload. Problems range from routine to mission critical with high impacts. This position primarily operates independently with strategic oversight from key stakeholders in the area of expertise. Judgement requires discretionary decision-making and technical expertise that impacts programs, services and Faculty/Departmental operations. Stress levels are moderate to high with seasonal peak periods and ongoing project work producing. This position requires a high level of concentration, resourcefulness, and creativity, as well as excellent communication and interpersonal skills at all technical levels. Demonstrates complex problem solving, critical thinking, creativity, emotional intelligence, good judgement, service orientation and cognitive flexibility. Working throughout the Schulich School of Engineering, this position develops knowledge and content for curriculum and learning workshops within the digital engineering and robotics areas. This position will work within Zetta (The SSE hub for digital research and teaching innovation), and provides expert support to faculty, TAs, students, and staff. The areas of knowledge this position supports includes current and emerging technologies such as, IoT, cybersecurity, big data & visualization, AI and machine learning, VR/AR/MR (e.g. AWS, Google Cloud, MS Azure, Python, Hadoop, Spark, TensorFlow, Unity etc.). Technical support will also be expected for Robotics engineering and the Engineering Maker Multiplex. Position Description Summary of Key Responsibilities (job functions include but are not limited to):

  • Incorporate and integrate the wide range of emerging leading-edge technologies into Zetta, the SSE makerspace, and SSE academic curricula
  • Identify and implement training opportunities in the suite of emerging technical offerings that are substantially altering the business and social environment
  • Participate in the ongoing design of Zetta's physical and digital infrastructures
  • Responsible for the overall operations of Zetta, including developing and maintaining operating processes, scheduling learning opportunities, and access allocations
  • Develop and maintain the Zetta programming plan
  • Provide guidance for Zetta-employed teaching and learning assistants, and workshop facilitators
  • Develop and deliver course/workshop programming ideas, content, and events
  • Plan and design specialized systems and applications to meet the needs of operations, research, and academics
  • Apply specialized skills and knowledge in the maintenance and development of core systems and complex programs and projects
  • Liaise with IT to ensure IT requirements are met for incorporating new technologies into Zetta
  • Identify new applications that aid our students in Teams and Clubs and other extracurricular pursuits
  • Support faculty in the discovery, evaluation, engagement, and adoption of new technologies
  • Support faculty and TAs in the training, integration, documentation, and support of technology in academic courses, lectures and labs
  • Maintain Zetta equipment, environment and inventories
  • Develop and maintain technical documentation for ideas, processes and procedures
  • Maintain knowledge of developing technological advancements and make recommendations for incorporating them into Zetta
Qualifications / Requirements:
  • Undergraduate Degree in Software Engineering or Computer Science, or a closely-related area
  • May consider a combination of education and experience
  • Proven programming experience required, especially for systems integration
  • High level of technical proficiency in cloud platforms such as Google, Apple, Amazon and others
  • Data querying and analysis skills
  • Strong troubleshooting and debugging skills
  • Ability to deliver integrated solutions leveraging multiple technologies/platforms
  • Capable of negotiating rapid change and innovating change
  • Some leadership experience is preferred
  • Some experience with course/workshop development and delivery is preferred
