The Department of Chemistry is a central academic unit within the College of Engineering and Physical Sciences that features dynamic and growing teaching and research programs. We work with ~6,000 undergraduate and graduate students each year and provide a wide range of services to support these activities. Currently consisting of 19 faculty members, 15 regular full-time staff, several temporary/contract staff,~ 10 sessional lecturer appointment with an annual operating budget of $6 million and a sizeable research enterprise comprised of ~70 grants totaling over $1.5 million in any given year.
Reporting to the Chair of the Department of Chemistry and the Associate Director, Finance and Operations, College of Physical and Engineering Science, the Administrative Officer the lead department administrator responsible for providing financial, human resources and administrative support and expertise to the Department Chair, faculty, staff, and students in order to effectively manage the day-to-day operations of the Department
Specific duties include: participating fully in the Department\'s strategic and operational planning activities, responsible for helping to develop and implement strategies and systems to achieve the Department of Chemistry\'s financial and operational goals. Manages and monitors an operating budget of approximately $6M and research accounts of approximately $1.5M
The incumbent is responsible for the human resources management of the administrative staff within Chemistry and provides guidance and support to the Chair and other supervisors on various human resources matters within Chemistry. This includes the direct supervision of 4 full-time administrative staff members and part time staff as required; ensuring adherences to collective agreements, legislation, University, College, and Department policies and procedures; oversees and coordinates the hiring of staff and student appointments.
This role is expected to manage and coordinate various administrative support activities for the department. It is also expected that the incumbent will promote creative problem solving through ongoing communication and interaction with others both within the department and across campus. This includes being an active member of department, college, and where appropriate university wide meetings/committees. They will be expected to take on special projects and other duties as they arise.
