Job Summary:


The Addictions Specialist provides support to individuals experiencing addiction-related challenges, helping them to achieve recovery and improve overall well-being. This role involves providing counseling, facilitating recovery programs, offering harm reduction strategies, addressing barriers that may hinder recovery and working collaboratively with other healthcare professionals and community services to meet the needs of individuals struggling with substance use and behavioral addictions.

Key Responsibilities



Client Support and Counseling:



Conduct one-on-one and group counseling sessions to support clients in understanding and managing their addiction. Assist clients in setting and achieving personal recovery goals, focusing on behavior change, coping strategies, and mental wellness. Provide crisis intervention and emotional support as needed. Address any barriers that hinder recovery, may include housing, financial, systemic, and family barriers.

Assessment and Care Planning:



Conduct intake assessments to evaluate clients' substance use patterns, mental health status, and other factors influencing their addiction. Develop individualized care plans tailored to the client's unique needs, goals, and circumstances. Monitor progress and adjust care plans as needed to support recovery. Harm Reduction Strategies: Implement harm reduction strategies to minimize the negative health effects of substance use while encouraging clients to reduce or cease their usage. Educate clients on safe practices, overdose prevention, and healthy coping mechanisms.

Recovery Education and Resources:



Educate clients and their families about addiction, recovery processes, and available support services. Facilitate educational workshops, support groups, and peer-led programs to raise awareness about addiction and wellness.

Referral and Coordination of Services:



Refer clients to additional services such as medical care, legal aid, or mental health counseling as needed. Assist clients in finding suitable housing, making referrals, and providing listings of housing options. Work with landlords and property managers to secure rental properties for clients, negotiate lease terms, and ensure housing conditions meet client needs. Provide support for housing applications, including completing paperwork, gathering required documents, and submitting applications on behalf of clients. Collaborate with other healthcare providers, social workers, harm reduction workers and community organizations to coordinate comprehensive care and ensure clients' needs are met.

Documentation and Reporting:



Maintain accurate and confidential records of client interactions, assessments, treatment plans, and progress. Prepare regular reports on client progress for internal purposes or for external agencies when required.

Advocacy and Empowerment:



Advocate for clients to ensure they have access to necessary services and resources, promoting their rights and well-being. Empower clients to take an active role in their recovery by fostering self-efficacy and confidence.

Community Outreach:



Engage with local communities to raise awareness of addiction issues, reduce stigma, and encourage individuals to seek help. Participate in community health initiatives, workshops, and events to promote wellness and addiction recovery. Able to work one-on-one in the North Central community

Qualifications:



Education: A degree or diploma in any field of Social Work, Psychology, Addiction Studies, or a related field is required or equivalent life experience. Additional certifications in addiction counseling or harm reduction may be preferred. Experience: At least 2-3 years of experience working in addiction services, mental health, or social services. Lived experience with addiction recovery and harm reduction approaches is an asset.

Skills:



Strong communication and interpersonal skills. Ability to provide empathetic, non-judgmental support. Knowledge of harm reduction, addiction recovery models, and mental health resources. Strong problem-solving skills and the ability to work effectively in a team-oriented environment. Knowledge of community resources and services related to addiction, housing, and mental health support.

Working Conditions:



This position may require evening or weekend hours depending on client needs. The role may involve working in a variety of settings, including office environments, residential treatment centers, and community-based locations. Travel within the local community may be required for outreach, client meetings, and coordination of services.
