Halifax Regional Municipality (HRM) is inviting applications for the part time position of Adapted Aquatic Coordinator in Parks and Recreation.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
The Adapted Aquatics Coordinator receives guidance and direction from the Aquatic & Leisure Specialists in collaboration with the Inclusion & Accessibility Specialists. They are responsible for effective and efficient coordination, development, implementation, and evaluation for program delivery. The candidate will also be responsible for the facilitation of employing hands-on support, processing risk management associated with the delivery of Adapted Swim Lessons to a variety of participants.
The Adapted Aquatic Coordinator in collaboration with the Aquatics & Leisure Specialist and the Inclusion & Accessibility Specialist provides leadership and training for casual aquatic staff. Leadership and training processes include educating and employing various supporting strategies and techniques for best practices, assisting staff in understanding and promoting during lessons of the risk associated with aquatics programming.
QUALIFICATIONS:
Education and Experience:
At least 2 years of experience in adapted aquatics or inclusion lessons
Some experience in a coordinator or supervisory role with a proven track record of excellence
Completed the first year of a diploma program or going into the third year of a degree program in a related field
Completion of courses in adapted recreation and child development recommended.
Certified as Therapeutic Recreation Specialist by the National Council for Therapeutic Recreation Certification (NCTRC) considered a viable asset
Experience working with children, youth and adults with disabilities or medical conditions including Autism Spectrum Disorder
Previous experience leading, supervising, or coaching youth staff members required
Specialized Training in Adapted Aquatics considered an asset, otherwise must be obtained within 6 months of employment
Proven track record of effective communication skills with parents, child and staff
Must have a valid driver's license and reliable vehicle.
Technical / Job Specific Knowledge and Abilities:
Knowledge of quality front-line customer service principles.
Proficiency with standard software technology such as Microsoft Office (i.e., Word, PowerPoint Presentations, Outlook, Excel, etc.), Adobe, etc., with capacity to learn new computer software systems used by Halifax Recreation Programming.
Knowledge of program delivery processes.
Effective oral and written communication.
Ability to make decisions and problem solve complex situations.
Ability to promote occupational safety and adapt to ever-changing environments and priorities.
Ability to champion change and innovation.
Professional attitude
Ability to manage several demanding tasks at one time
Ability to send out timely information to inclusion swimmer instructors and offer in the moment support for lessons
Ability to lift, carry, push, or pull equal to own body weight as per National Lifesaving Society Standard.
Frequent travel throughout the municipality is required.
Frequent use of a computer and visual concentration.
Free swim 400 metres without stopping
Maintaining communication with large numbers of teenage staff in a safety sensitive environment.
Requirement to respond professionally to upset public, in person, or on the phone
Supervises safety sensitive positions which are required to safeguard citizens while on site of municipally operated pools, beaches and other outdoor environments including remote rural areas of Halifax
Working in hazardous environments that pose safety risks such as working various chemicals (i.e. various pool-testing chemicals, chlorine, acid, soda ash, diesel, propane), slippery surfaces/floors, noise pollution, heavy lifting, poor lighting, poor air quality, high visitor population.
Security Clearance Requirements:
Selected applicants must complete an employment screening check, including a Child Abuse Registry Check and a Criminal Record Check with Vulnerable Sector Search.

- Testing may be conducted as a component of the selection process to assess technical and job specific knowledge. Candidates, who are selected for testing, may be tested in a group setting, scheduled at the employer's discretion.
Up to 20 hours a week with flexibility of up to 30 hours a week to complete duties
Work Schedule is flexible and requires day, evening and weekend work. Would need to be present on pool deck for at least the first few weeks of lessons to supervise inclusion swim instruction and offer support.
SALARY:
$20.70 per hour (Non-Union) plus 4% vacation pay
