POSITION SUMMARY:
At The Salvation Army Meighen Health Centre, the Recreation Assistant provides recreation therapies to residents according to their assessed needs. The Recreation Assistant works in collaboration with all other clinical care providers to optimize the residents' experience.
The Recreation Assistant is required to perform their duties in a manner consistent with the Salvation Army Meighen Health Centre's core values, ensure resident safety, and demonstrate customer service excellence while responsible for planning, implementation and evaluation of programs and services provided to the residents.
SPECIFIC RESPONSIBILITIES:General Strategy:
Provides for recreation and leisure activities including outings in accordance with established policy, the resident plan of care and within the scope of practice
Contributes to and sustains a plan of care to meet residents' assessed need
Assist in planning for assigned resident area activity calendars in accordance with the care plan goals and preferences of the residents.
Responsible for maintaining accurate and complete records of care delivered
Responsible for maintaining recreation supplies and advising manager when supplies need to be restocked
Follows all policies and procedures; contributes to the review and development of recreation therapy policies as indicated
Identifies appropriate therapeutic recreation goals and interventions on the care plans of identified residents
Follows established job routines daily, including assisting with feeding residents
Effectively participates in care conferences when manager is not available
Seeks direction from the Recreation and Volunteer Coordinator when resident need exceeds experience or scope of practice.
Financial Accountability:
Utilizes assigned equipment and supplies appropriately as per policies and procedures.
Human Resources:
Participates in an effective orientation, and performance management process in accordance with The Salvation Army Meighen Health Centre's standards for all employees within the nursing department.
Models positive working relationships with the management, co-workers, and union
Actively participates in the annual educational programs
Demonstrates relevant understanding of and compliance with legislative knowledge of the Employment Standards Act, Human Rights Act, collective agreement and MOHLTC Act as it applies to the nursing direct care staff.
Health and Safety:
Demonstrates understanding of, and compliance with, workers' responsibilities under the Occupational Health andSafety Act and Regulations, WSIB policy and Meighen Health Centre's Health and Safety plans, policies and procedures
Attends Health and Safety in-services and taking action to address unsafe conditions and/or procedures, to ensure a healthy and safe work environment
Advises supervisor or designate immediately of incidents that may result in an Occupational Accident Claim, any concerns with the physical plant, incidents or injuries and completes required reports
Follows all health and safety policies and procedures. Works safely to reduce the risk of injury to self, co-workers, and residents
Wears personal protective equipment as designated
Maintains a clean, safe environment for residents utilizing infection control principles
Maintains a sound working knowledge of their roles and responsibilities during all emergency situations when working different shifts.
Community Relations:
Promotes a positive working environment with the service providers working with MHC
Establishes and maintains positive communication between the MHC and the community.
Family and Resident Relations:
Contributes to positive customer service with residents and families in day-to-day work
Deals tactfully and courteously with residents, resident's family, visitors and staff in a positive manner
Facilitates communication in complex care issues to foster positive resident outcomes
Establishes and sustains care in a manner that is resident centred and fosters evidence based best practice.
Quality Management:
Participates in all aspects of the Quality and Risk management program as it pertains to Programs department
Ensures the collection of clinical indicators within timeline monthly as assigned
Contributes to the development of recommendations for corrective action
Maintains personal accountability for completion of monthly audits as assigned
Follows established job routines for recreation assistants daily
Ensures that care provided is documented as required in a timely manner using the assigned documentation tools.
Ministry of Health Compliance:
Fosters good working relationships with relevant persons within the Ministry of Health and Long-Term Care (MOHLTC)
Knows and interprets MOHLTC legislation, regulation and process
Maintains effective liaison with consultants and physicians
Ensures that systems and processes are in place to achieve and sustain compliance
Understands all components of related legislation for staff, residents and families.
QUALIFICATIONS:Education & Experience
Diploma or degree in recreation/leisure studies, therapeutic recreation from a recognized college or university or as per Ministry regulations
Minimum 1 year experience in a long-term care setting
Good oral and written communication skills
Ability to follow direction and work in a team environment
Knowledge of programming needs for older adults diagnosed with dementia
Willingness to work flexible hours including evenings and weekends
Proficiency in interpersonal communication skills, both written and verbal
Proficiency with WORD, email, internet use and computerized documentation an asset.
Knowledge and familiarity with computer operations and software applications, including resident records.
Current knowledge of issues and trends including best practices in the enhancement of quality of life
Knowledge of current quality improvement and risk management concepts and approaches with special emphasis on the prevention of falls and least restraint policies
Deal tactfully and courteously with residents, resident's families, visitors and staff in a positive manner
Demonstrate a high level of integrity, sound judgment and ability to maintain confidentiality
Ability to follow direction and work in a team environment
Excellent written and verbal communications skills in English.
Compensation:
The target hiring range for this position is $22.72 to $24.14 with a maximum of $25.55.
Placement in the salary range will be based on factors such as market conditions, internal equity, and candidate experience, skills, and qualifications relevant to the role.
