Job SummaryUnder the direct supervision of UVic\'s Associate Director, Research Profile, and in collaboration with ACET\'s Director, Partnerships and Engagement, the ACET Strategic Communications Officer supports the strategic communications priorities of the Accelerating Community Energy Transformation (ACET) initiative, including developing story narratives to promote new and innovative research partnerships, projects and outcomes, and developing communications, marketing and outreach materials to support ACET\'s external engagement strategy.This role helps ACET\'s Strategic Research Area (SRA) leads identify the optimum methods and tools for communicating results and ensures brand and messaging consistency across all partner institutions.In collaboration with the ACET team, the ACET Strategic Communications Officer takes an active role in monitoring ongoing ACET activities and projects to identify and ensure timely outreach, including project milestones, success stories and thought leadership opportunities, including responses to emergent external events (e.g. op-eds, expert advisories, etc.).The ACET Strategic Communications Officer engages with ACET researchers, partners and funders regionally, nationally and internationally. In collaboration with the ACET Director, Partnerships and Engagement and the ACET Research Impact Officer, the ACET Strategic Communications Officer aids in the development and implementation of ACET\'s communications and engagement strategy and supports external reporting through impact storytelling and data visualization.The individual may be required to work some irregular hours and take occasional overnight trips to support ACET events and activities outside of Victoria.Job RequirementsThis position requires a bachelor\'s degree in business, communications, public relations or journalism, or a related field, plus a minimum of five (5) years of communications experience. An equivalent combination of education, training, and experience may be considered.Required Experience:
  • High degree of familiarity with new, emerging media and social media.
  • Experience working with website content management systems (Cascade) and social media platforms (LinkedIn, Facebook, Twitter, YouTube, Instagram, etc.)
  • Experience developing, implementing and evaluating strategic communications plans.
  • Skilled in writing, editing, developing and managing content for a range of audiences and channels.
  • Ability to manage projects simultaneously and adapt quickly to changing needs or priorities.
  • Ability to develop strong relationships with news media.
  • Experience developing and implementing promotional plans in support of complex or multi-year projects.
  • Campaign planning, budget development and financial management experience.
  • Experience applying project management principles and best practices.
Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
  • Ability to synthesize and explain complex scientific and technical ideas to a variety of non-specialist audiences.
  • Attentive to detail with demonstrated expertise in research and fact checking stories.
  • Superior interview, writing and editing skills.
  • Reputation and brand management with the ability to identify and mitigate risk.
  • Strong organizational skills with the ability to meet deadlines and manage multiple projects and priorities.
  • Ability to consider diverse viewpoints to ensure rich and thoughtful representation of people and perspectives in storytelling.
  • Deep understanding of creative planning and production processes for traditional and new media.
  • Demonstrated experience establishing and maintaining relationships with media.
  • Ability to build and maintain productive working relationships with diverse people in a complex, decentralized work environment.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of audience segmentation and analysis.
  • High proficiency in MS 360 (Outlook, Power Point, Word, Excel, Teams, OneDrive) and other technology-based collaboration and project management tools (e.g. Miro, Slido, Trello, Asana, Zoom).
Assets or Preferences:
  • Basic knowledge and interest in climate solutions (mitigation and adaptation)
  • Experience in a non-profit, post-secondary, research facility or similarly large, complex environment.
  • Enjoys building new initiatives from the ground up.
