Job Description

Join the Urban Planning and Economy Department and play a vital role in the financial integrity of land development projects across Edmonton.
As an Accounting Assistant, you'll be the foundational support for the Development Servicing Agreements Unit, ensuring that all financial data is meticulously tracked, processed, and maintained. This is a chance to apply your accounting acumen and superior organizational skills in a high-volume, dynamic environment that directly contributes to the city's operational efficiency and strong external partnerships.
What will you do?

  • Input, organize, and meticulously review financial data pertinent to individual land development projects
  • Accurately track the receipt and disbursement of thousands of annual transactions related to assessments and fees, keeping all records up-to-date
  • Prepare and process basic financial documents, such as journal vouchers and cheque requisitions, for review and approval
  • Assist in the administration of Letters of Credit, development bonds, and cash securities
  • Liaise with financial institutions and developers/land development companies to confirm documentation and track the status of security instruments
  • Act as the initial point of contact for routine internal and external inquiries, directing complex questions to the Financial Analyst
  • Generate and format routine monthly and year-end reports from spreadsheets for review
  • Perform informal reconciliations of spreadsheets against other records to identify and correct basic data entry errors
Qualifications
  • A recognized accounting certificate
  • One year of practical experience in an office environment
Assets:
  • Knowledge of an enterprise resource planning (ERP) system, such as SAP
  • A Bookkeeping or Accounting Assistant Certificate
Skills required for success:
  • Understand and apply basic accounting principles, including debits, credits, and the flow of financial transactions, to accurately prepare documents like journal vouchers and requisitions
  • Ensure the accuracy of thousands of financial transactions and prevent errors. This is the most critical skill for the role
  • Advanced skills in using spreadsheet software (e.g., Google Sheets, Microsoft Excel) for data entry, tracking, reporting, and basic analysis
  • Communicate clearly and professionally, both verbally and in writing, with colleagues, developers, and financial institutions
  • Identify and resolve routine data errors or procedural issues independently, within established guidelines
  • Manage and prioritize daily tasks efficiently to meet deadlines, particularly for time-sensitive processes like security tracking and report generation
  • Organize and maintain a high volume of physical and digital records (financial documents, correspondence, security instruments)
  • Work effectively in a supporting role to the Financial Analyst, providing updates and working together to achieve unit goals

Work Environment:
  • Note: This position may be eligible for a hybrid work arrangement with the flexibility to work from both home and the worksite as per the Letter of Understanding between the City of Edmonton and Civic Service Union 52
  • The weekly hours of work for this position are currently under review and may change at a future time. Any changes will be made in accordance with the City of Edmonton/Civic Service Union 52 collective agreement, and the incumbent will be notified in advance
  • This position involves working primarily indoors in a professional office environment
  • Requires sitting for extended periods

Up to 1 temporary full-time position for up to 11 months

Salary Range: $29.0520 - $36.458 (Hourly)
