About Our Opportunity

The accounting and procurement technician is responsible for processing accounting, procurement and payroll documents for the Department of Agriculture and Department of Fish & Aquaculture, and related crown corporations, boards and commissions. The technician is also responsible to review all documents for accuracy and adherence to government policy, as well as provide advise to clients on processes, documentation requirements and policy. This role requires the use of multiple accounting and payroll systems.

Primary Accountabilities

  • Responsible for the administering, verification, audit and processing of all financial source documents for the client departments, agencies, boards and commissions (Invoices, Journal Vouchers, PCARDs, Board Travel, etc). Includes following up on missing, incorrect or delinquent documents.
  • Performs procurement related functions (Purchase requisitions, purchase orders for items over threshold, amendments, etc.). Reviews all procurement documents for accuracy and adherence to policy. Advises and recommend to management and staff on a variety of procurement related challenges (Service contracts, professional contracts, TCA or emergency requirements). Escalates issues to Manager with suggested resolution. Responsible for the internal record keeping relative to procurement documents for clients.
  • Responsible for Accounts Receivable processing, including invoices, deposits, and bank related transactions.
  • Responsible for Accounts Payable processing, including invoices, cheque requests and other payables transactions.
Qualifications and Experience

To be successful in this role you possess a Grade 11 education plus five years relevant experience or equivalent combination of training and experience may be acceptable. Preference will be given to those with post-secondary accounting training.

As the ideal candidate you have experience with processing accounts payable, procurement, financial accounting, financial reporting, and reconciliations. Experience with reconciliation of general ledger accounts as well as preparing journal entries is an asset. Excellent written and verbal communication skills, interpersonal skills, and the ability to work both independently and within a team is essential.

Candidates need to possess a high attention to detail and a working knowledge of GAAP and SAP. Sound judgement and problem-solving skills are required to allow for the accurate interpretation of information to make effective decisions daily.

Pay Grade: CL 22

Salary Range: $1,924.59 - $2,128.70 Bi-Weekly
