Our Internship program offers paid 18-month internships for new grads interested in a career in municipal public service. The program provides training, development, and on-the-job experience for candidates that have graduated within the last 24 months.

We are inviting applications for the 18-month term position of Accessibility Auditors Intern in Property, Fleet & Environment. This is a bargaining unit position. In the event that there are no qualified NSUPE candidates we will consider external candidates for the opportunity.

The Intern Program is designed to provide experiential learning and maximum professional exposure to interns in their chosen field of study while exploring the benefits of working for the municipality. Over the course of the internship, candidates will learn about government policy, operations, administration, services, and planning in a collaborative and supportive environment. Reporting to the Manager of Building Infrastructure, the Accessibility Auditor will be responsible for completing accessibility audits at over 250 buildings throughout HRM to determine the current state of accessibility at each location. A standardized audit template has been developed. The Accessibility Auditor will help to develop the action plan to map out the work ahead to help HRM reach the goal of an accessible municipality by 2030.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Develop project work plans, schedules, cost estimates and project budgets to complete building audits;
  • Prepare technical reports, staff reports to HRM Council, liaise and consult with other government agencies, consultants, etc. as required in performance of the responsibilities of the position;
  • Promote a strong customer service orientation within the service area, monitor service performance, and ensure that high standards of customer service and satisfaction are achieved;
  • Encourage innovation and process improvements;
  • Maintain healthy and safe workplace, and ensure compliance with all applicable codes and legislation, including occupational health and safety, WHMIS and hazardous substances programs;
  • Maintain accurate and complete records, as required by Halifax Regional Municipality;
  • Ensure high standards of ethical and professional conduct within the service area; and establish and maintain positive and effective working relations with Halifax Regional Municipality management and staff, members of Council and the general public;
  • Possess a valid Nova Scotia Driver's License and be prepared to use personal vehicle in accordance with HRM's mileage policy.
QUALIFICATIONS
Education and Experience:
  • Recent graduate from a relevant post-secondary program (such as a Diploma in Architectural Engineering Technology, Construction Management Technology, Civil Engineering Technology, a Bachelor of Engineering in a relevant stream, a Bachelor in Planning, Master in Planning or Certificates and/or Diplomas in geomatics).
  • To be eligible for the internship, candidates must have graduated within the last 24 months or be confirmed to graduate in June 2022 from a recognized or legally authorized university or community college.
  • Candidates must be legally entitled to work in Canada at time of application and maintain this status for the duration of 18-month term.
  • We value non-traditional experience and candidates are encouraged to outline in their application any student leadership, volunteering, extra-curricular, or community-based experience they possess.
  • Preference will be given to those candidates who have demonstrated an interest in public policy or government administration
  • Planning or Engineering Graduates as well as Rick Hansen Foundation Accessibility Certified (RHFAC) professionals would also be considered.
Technical / Job Specific Knowledge and Abilities:
  • Thorough knowledge of occupational health, safety and environmental regulations, building codes, recognized construction practices, and other applicable municipal, provincial and federal legislation.
  • General knowledge in a wide variety of building construction related disciplines including but not limited to an architectural, civil, structural, mechanical, HVAC, electrical.
  • Good communication and written skills and a strong attention to detail.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office.
  • Experience in a government, public-sector, or non-profit environment is considered as asset.
Security Clearance Requirements: Applicants may be required to complete an employment security screening check. You will be provided with more specific information during the recruitment process.

COMPETENCIES:

WORK STATUS: Term 18 months, NSUPE Local 13 position

HOURS OF WORK: Monday-Friday, 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. 35 hours per week

SALARY: $50,000 per year

WORK LOCATION: 88 Alderney Drive
