Overview

A 6 month contract, under the supervision of the Manager, Student Accessibility Services, the Accessibility Advisor assists students with accessing academic accommodations at Lakehead University. The Accessibility Advisor examines documentation to determine appropriate accommodations for students with disabilities; provides ongoing academic support for students with disabilities, presents information about Student Accessibility Services at university functions; arranges training and provides bursary information for students who require assistive technology; liaises with various university offices, professors, medical practitioners and disability offices at other post-secondary institutions when necessary.


Responsibilities

Student Support - 55%


Direct Student Support by facilitating Academic Accommodations for Students, both new and returning. This will include the collection and processing of all relevant documentation, consulting with students to determine accommodation needs, logging all information, consulting with professors and healthcare providers, consulting with students on responsibility, attending feedback sessions and coordinating spaces/ Invigilators for accommodated tests/ exams.


Funding Eligibility - 10%


Determine funding eligibility and coordinate assessment referrals to appropriate professionals. This role will also administer assistive technology licenses, expenses through OSAP, Bursary for Students with Disabilities (BSWD), and provide information and training to students regarding assistive technology.


Support Students with Disabilities - 25%


Provide Ongoing Support for Students with Disabilities, including meeting with students, and providing training (i.e. time management, learning strategies, etc.). This role liaises with various University offices, staff from Georgian College, Library Services Alternative Education Resources for Ontario (AERO), and professionals outside the University (i.e. Physicians, Mental Health Workers, etc.).


Promotion of Support Programs - 10%


Raise awareness of available support for students with disabilities/ medical conditions among Staff, Faculty and students. This role provides support and information to all Lakehead University students, secondary school teachers, and prospective students. This role will prepare and coordinate all information functions, facilitate the sessions and present the materials and represent Lakehead and Student Accessibility Services while attending conferences and other special events.


Qualifications


------------------


Bachelor's Degree in Education, Psychology or related field. Experience with Clockwork Scheduling program. Strong computer knowledge. Familiarity with assistive technology (ie. Dragon Naturally Speaking, Kurzweil). Familiarity with Lakehead University's Policies and Procedures. Strong knowledge of Ontario Human Rights Code/AODA. Strong knowledge and extensive experience working with students with disabilities.
