University of Calgary Continuing Education (ContEd)

is currently recruiting for

four Academic Tutors

(contract/term positions) in support of the Pre-Pathways to Education for Indigenous Students (PEISSA) Program and high school upgrading courses in math, science, and humanities for the winter 2026 term.


University of Calgary ContEd houses one of Canada's largest and most successful continuing education departments. It is a multi-disciplinary unit offering diploma, certificate and non-degree programs using on-site and online technologies for course delivery.


In support of the University of Calgary's core principles and financial objectives, ContEd is an academic unit with a mandate to respond to the needs of the community through the design, development and delivery of lifelong learning opportunities.


Continuing Education consists of a number of distinct programming teams with a central service team, serving over 20,000 students annually. It is expected to fund, through revenue generation, the majority of its operational costs while contributing financially to the University. The success of University of Calgary Continuing Education in meeting its business target in a competitive environment is dependent upon providing highly effective student services and quality programs.

Nature of the Work:




Academic Tutor reports to the Manager, Domestic Programs and will work closely with the Education Program Innovation Specialist and Indigenous Program Assistant. The Academic Tutor will support the Pre-Pathways to Education for Indigenous Students (PEISSA) Program. The PEISSA program helps Indigenous learners complete high school prerequisites for admission to University of Calgary program. The PEISSA program functions through the Academic Preparation Program (APP), that offers high school upgrading courses in math, science, and humanities.


Continuing Education is hiring up to four Academic Tutors to support PEISSA students in successfully completing their APP courses.

Primary Purpose of the Position:



The Academic Tutor will work up to 10 hours per week for 12 weeks (full semester). The Academic Tutor will facilitate drop-in tutoring sessions over Zoom for PEISSA students, including creating short lesson plans based on Future Skills modules and assisting with specific student questions. The modules include:

This opportunity is suitable for existing university students who have experience and/or are passionate about teaching tutoring or helping others learn. We are particularly interested in university students who have an interest in teaching, instructing or working with Indigenous students to successfully complete Academic Upgrading courses.

Qualifications/Expertise Required:



Currently enrolled in a degree program such Arts, Commerce, Communications, Education, Indigenous Studies, Science, Social Science or Social Work at the University of Calgary. Some related experience in student support and group facilitation. Comfortable presenting and speaking in front of groups. Evidence of strong academic achievement in the subject matter of tutoring. Knowledge of Microsoft Office applications (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, Teams). Experience with Desire2Learn (D2L) and Zoom Excellent written and verbal communication, time management, organizational and interpersonal skills, and strong attention to detail. Positive attitude and demonstrated ability to be a collaborative team member. Demonstrates leadership, professionalism, and good judgement. Engaged in community, including volunteerism, mentorship, leadership, coaching, cultural involvement, etc. Preference will be given to candidates who were previous ISAP students, and students with lived experience as an Indigenous person.

Accountabilities/Tasks and Duties:




The Academic Tutor performs a variety of duties in support of Continuing Educations PEISSA Program. The Academic Tutor duties may include but are not limited to administrative support, student support, and program and community engagement. Specific duties include:

Administrative Support



The Academic Tutor will conduct administrative work such as maintaining a Desire2Learn (D2L) shell, communicating by email with staff and students, progress reporting, and assisting with process development. This includes:

Maintain the programs Desire2Learn (D2L) course shell, including uploading resources, organizing materials, and ensuring consistent updates. Develop lesson plans, learning activities, and weekly schedules to support student learning. Manage student records, attendance, progress notes, and evaluation data in compliance with UCalgary policies and confidentiality standards. Prepare and submit progress summaries, reports, and student updates to program staff as required. Support the development and refinement of program processes, documentation, and resource materials. Coordinate tutoring schedules, appointment bookings, and learning session logistics. Perform other administrative duties as required.

Student Support



Provide group tutoring in assigned academic subject areas. Offer academic mentoring by helping students develop effective study habits, time management skills, and learning strategies. Support students in building self-advocacy and communication skills, including how to reach out to instructors and access support services. Assist students in navigating university systems (e.g., D2L, email, advising, library resources) and in setting personalized academic goals. Identify academic or personal challenges affecting student performance and refer students to appropriate supports when needed. Support exam preparation and assignment planning through structured review sessions, skills coaching, and resource recommendations

Program and Community Support



Collaborate with staff, instructors, and advisors to ensure consistent learner support and communication. Participate in team meetings, training sessions, and ongoing professional development. Contribute to program evaluation efforts by gathering student feedback and identifying opportunities for improvement. Build positive relationships with community partners and stakeholders when appropriate to the role.
