Academic Development Specialist

The Student Success Centre (SSC) offers inclusive advising and academic support services to enhance students' academic skills, support their academic wayfinding and attain their individual academic goals. We welcome prospective, open studies, undergraduate and graduate students. We strive to offer student-centered resources and be a place where students can ask questions and learn more about strategies and resources that support their learning and university success.


Reporting to the Director, Student Success Centre, the Academic Development Specialist (ADS), Neurodivergent Student Supports, holds expertise in developing programs and academic support services that are designed to support the academic success of undergraduate and graduate learners who are neurodivergent. As an expert learning strategist with significant experience working with students with disabilities and/or learning differences, the ADS Neurodivergent students brings a strength-based lens to the development and implementation of one on one and community-based programming. The ADS also collaborates and consults with other student affairs and professional staff on campus to facilitate more accessible and inclusive campus environments for neurodivergent students. Working closely with staff in Student Wellness Services and Student Accessibility Services, this role requires strong communication, facilitation, negotiation, leadership and student service skills. This is a continuing position working 28 hours/week.

Summary of Key Responsibilities

(job functions include but are not limited to):

Promote students' effective use of academic strategies by modeling and teaching a variety of study strategies in both individual and small group settings Assist students in identifying barriers to academic success and work with students to proactively help students improve academic and study skills Work with students to set goals and develop action plans for academic success. Monitor student progress towards achieving individual goals and adjust teaching strategies as required to promote student success Liaise with Student Wellness Services, Student Accessibility Services and other support services staff to ensure sound process and timely referrals Adhere to POPA regulations in student interactions and as they apply to student and University records Oversee NICE (Neurodiversity Immersive Campus Experience) in fall annually including workshop development and scheduling, training and mentorship of student staff and event logistics and communication Recruit, train, mentors and provide in-scope supervision to student para-professional staff and volunteers Working in collaboration with SSC staff and other student services professionals and utilizing a students as partners lens, develop community and skill building events and learning opportunities for neurodivergent students Establish programming goals in collaboration with the Student Success Centre team and other stakeholders and create and maintain records for accurate data reporting Coordinate assessment evaluation of neurodivergent programming, including the development and delivery of annual reports Serve as the primary contact for neurodivergent support programs within the SSC, liaising directly and maintaining strong relationships with campus staff in the development and refinement of programs

Qualifications / Requirements:



Masters degree in Education, Psychology, Social Work, Adult Learning, or equivalent 5- 7 years of experience working with students experiencing academic challenges including experience supporting students with documented disabilities and neurodivergent students Strong background in best practices in relation to the accessibility of print and digital materials and teaching and learning environments would be considered an asset Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively across various units to move forward inclusivity and accessibility initiatives for neurodivergent student populations Ability to conceptualize, design and implement individual and small group learning sessions and facilitate the academic skill development of post-secondary student Ability to handle successfully a large, intense caseload (up to 20 student appointments per week during peak periods) with a positive student-centric attitude Demonstrated ability to manage and collaboratively engage others in ongoing projects required Experience developing and implementing evidence-based programs and services to students required Strong working knowledge of post-secondary student experience and needs across various students' intersectional identities Strong organizational and planning skills with the ability to establish priorities, manage multiple demands and meet deadlines Demonstrates high level of professionalism and personal leadership; ability to represent the office and university with internal and external stakeholders Demonstrated ability to manage multiple projects and comfort working in a busy, collaborative office environment Demonstrated ability to be resourceful, creative, innovative, and flexible Excellent computer skills including experience using technical advising tools (such as student information management systems like PeopleSoft or Banner, Degree Audit software and Microsoft Office) Understanding of procedures to safeguard confidential student information and requirements for confidentiality as outlined in the Freedom of Information and Protection of Privacy Act (FOIP)
