Position Title Academic Content Specialist - Chemistry and Science (10 month sessional)
Required Qualifications

  • 4-year degree with university courses or equivalent with strong science background.
  • Post-secondary course work in Chemistry, Biology, Earth Science and Microbiology with a strong emphasis on the sciences.
  • At least one-year tutoring, teaching and training adult learners
Preferred Qualifications
  • 2 years experience working in a student academic help centre in a post-secondary environment OR
  • 2 years experience teaching in a post-secondary environment
  • Demonstrated ability to use technology in virtual service delivery including Moodle, Microsoft Teams, Zoom, etc.
  • Training in Supplemental Instruction and experience training and mentoring student tutors in Supplemental Instruction method.
  • Demonstrated ability to coach adult students to improve their problem-solving and learning skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to model and teach effective study strategies to students through multiple delivery methods (in-person, group, individual, virtual, etc.)
  • Able to adopt a team-oriented approach to student learning and support classroom instruction methods
  • Able to adapt communication style and instructional approach to suit the needs of individual students
  • Able to build relationships with instructors, audit courses and build support materials for instructors
  • Able to facilitate and initiate an individualized approach to student learning that recognizes learning differences and educational backgrounds.

Reporting to the Manager of the Academic Success Centre, this position is an integral component of providing academic support to Keyano College students.

Key responsibilities include:
  • Providing one-on-one and small group tutoring to students in-person and virtually using alternative delivery methods (as needed).
  • Tutoring courses ranging from college prep through to post-secondary courses in the sciences
  • Assessing attitudes about science and setting goals for consultations.
  • Acquiring, developing and reviewing resources that would assist student learning.
  • Strong ethics and adherence to academic integrity policy to avoid over-tutoring and ensure that student work is the student\'s own.
  • Mentoring student tutors on best practices when teaching.
  • Teaching effective ways of learning course content and delivering engaging presentations on study skills to students virtually and in-person and virtually (as needed).
  • Collaborating with Keyano instructors and members of student services to provide targeted and integrated tutoring services and understand common student challenges with course content
  • Assisting with data collection for the purposes of tracking student utilization of the tutoring centre and other statistics.
  • Maintaining accurate records.
  • Assisting the Academic Success Centre in creating an environment that encourages and supports student learning and development.
  • Contributing to the Academic Success Centre social media presence and website.
  • Assisting in special projects as needed.
This is a full-time, 10 month sessional position available from August to June each year and renewable each year.
