Nature of Position:



The Aboriginal Supported Child Development is a part of the Ki-Low-Na Friendship Society Child and Family Team reporting directly to the Skemxist Manager to help children with developmental disabilities. The successful candidate will work with children who have a range of cognitive and physical developmental challenges and will be responsible for working with the ASCD Worker to implement individualized activities for children and their families.

Duties:



Assess children and support parents in learning about their education, social, or health needs. Make home visits with infants to pre-school aged children to assess their development and plan with parents an ongoing program to stimulate or enhance optimal development and monitor progress. Maintain liaison with other health, social service professionals and community resources. Provide integrated support services to Aboriginal Families with a focus on developmentally delayed children ages 6-18 years. Be a resource person to parents and blend traditional and modern parenting practices. Make appropriate referrals for further assessment and or support. Keep ongoing, accurate client records; submit monthly and yearly reports with summary stats to team leader as required.

Additional Responsibilities:



Ongoing cooperation and work within a multi-disciplinary team or networking with other related or support fields to promote health, wellness, mental health, safety, nutrition, dental care, immunization program, family planning, behavior management, relationship issues, addictions and other factors that affect the environment of the child in his family home. Must have the physical capability to lift program equipment, toys, and supplies for program delivery in the various locations.

Knowledge and Skills:



Aboriginal ancestry preferred with working knowledge of Aboriginal culture.

Ability to develop and maintain a warm, caring, responsive relationship with the children.

Ability to establish and maintain supportive, collaborative relationships with families and staff.

Demonstrated ability to use a cultural safety framework when working with Aboriginal children, families, and communities.

Knowledge of community childcare resources and other community support services

Knowledge of the strengths needs, and diversity of the communities served by the agency.

Demonstrated knowledge of family-centred service, early intervention, typical and atypical child development, family support and individual planning.

Skill in administering formal and informal developmental assessment tools.

Ability to maintain a positive, professional, non-judgmental attitude.

Knowledge and skills in adult education

Must have excellent organizational and communication skills.

Must have strong computer skills, Experience with Microsoft Office and Internet

Must be able to work independently and be reliable and self-motivated.

Must be able and willing to work in partnership with other programs and resources.

Must maintain professional standards and maintain confidentiality with respect to their families and work.

Qualifications:



Basic early childhood education training or equivalent

Current Childcare Facilities and Licensing approved first aid certificate.

Current BC License to practice as an Early Childhood Educator

Three years' work experience in inclusive childcare settings

Requirements:



Training in childhood development or equivalent, as indicated by the needs of the child/ren

One year of work experience in childcare settings and/or recent experience working with children who require additional support needs.

Valid BC Driver's license, reliable vehicle, and clean driver's abstract

Must consent to criminal record check (vulnerable sector) with RCMP.

Flexible work hours

Physical ability to perform the duties of the position.
